Shift: Varied scheduled.
Summary of Core Job Functions: The dietician provides on-going nutrition services to patients through out the hospital. Provides nutrition education or consultation to patients. families, and the treatment team. Provides educational in-services to hospital staff as requested.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential core function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, experience, and ability necessary to perform this job.
Essential Core Functions:
1. Patient Relationship: Develops and maintains a therapeutic relationship throughout the healthcare continuum.
2. Assuring/Improving Quality Care: Facilitates the patient and family’s right to receive safe, quality, and cost effective care. Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care and information.
3. Patient/Staff Education: Demonstrates a commitment to meeting the learning needs of patients and families. Utilizes appropriate resources to meet those needs and achieve positive patient outcomes. Assists in creating an environment that promotes educational growth opportunities for colleagues.
4. Leadership/Collaboration/Professional Development: Demonstrates respect and understanding for peers and other clinical disciplines and participates as an effective member of the patient care team to formulate an integrated approach to care. Demonstrates leadership behaviors and is committed to the development of self and others.
Job Specifications:
1. Education, Certification/Licensure, and/or Experience
a. Graduate of an accredited university in nutrition or dietetics
b. Valid West Virginia License/Registration as a Dietician.
c. Current food handlers card
d. Minimum one year experience as a dietician. Hospital or psychiatric setting preferred.
2. Knowledge, skills, and abilities required
a. Good communication skills (written and oral) and good computer skills.
b. Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning.
c. Must possess the ability and willingness to work professionally with other personnel, patients, family members and guests.
d. Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, emotionally upset, varying age population, and, at times, hostile people within the Hospital.
e. Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with patients, personnel, and support agencies.
f. Comply with all hospital policies and procedures. Must actively support the mission, philosophy and goals of the facility.
g. Provides nutrition evaluations and continuous care on all assigned patients and demonstrates expertise in all populations served.
h. Provides nutrition education or consultation to patients, families, and the treatment team.
i. Provides patient menus that to the extent possible reflect the patient’s age, religious preferences, and cultural preferences.
j. Documents all clinical services provided.
k. Participates in the hospital performance improvement program
l. Works in the dietary department as an aide or cook as needed
m. Must not pose a direct threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace.
