River Ridge Farm Crew Positions

River Ridge Farm and Market
Portland, CT Full Time
POSTED ON 2/12/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/11/2025

River Ridge Farm is a four-season, diversified fruit, vegetable, and cut flower farm entering its 6th year of production. We farm across three locations, with an acre under greenhouse cultivation and about 15 acres in field production. As a low-till, organic operation, we are deeply committed to soil health and environmental well-being. Our year-round farm store in Middletown; seasonal farmstand in Cheshire; and participation in 6–7 weekly farmers markets during the main season reflect our dedication to local food systems. We also supply several wholesale accounts. This is a production-based farm with a close-knit crew committed to growing high-quality food for our community. If you’re passionate about sustainable agriculture and working with a hardworking, fun-loving team, we’d love to hear from you!

Position Overview

The farm crew will be responsible for assisting in the production, harvest, and washing of vegetables, fruits, and cut flowers. Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the employee’s skills, interests, and professional development goals.

Expectations

  • All In! We’re looking for individuals willing to commit to this work. We show up on time, with curiosity and dedication. We farm in comfort and discomfort (short of illness).
  • Production Mindset: Efficiency is key. Staying aware of the team’s pace, thinking a few steps ahead, and anticipating the next task ensures we stay on track. We aim to move with purpose and set ourselves up for success in every step.
  • Stay Present: Phones are primarily for taking photos and communicating with team members. Emergencies and necessary situations aside, work time is not for personal calls or messaging.
  • No Butts or Buts: We don’t sit unless absolutely necessary. Crawling, kneeling, squatting, walking, skipping, and running—all good. Sitting for extended periods? Not our style.
  • Clear Communication: Be as direct and clear as possible. We value a willingness to communicate, even when it’s hard.
  • Detail-Oriented: Attention to detail is essential, whether it’s ensuring quality in harvesting, thoroughly finishing a project, or knowing when it’s time to walk away.
  • Investment in Learning: We encourage curiosity. If you see something unfamiliar—mention it. Take time to learn and share your discoveries with the team.
  • Strong Teamwork: We’re all leaders on this farm. Your voice and impact matter, and collaboration is key to our production methods.
  • Self-Initiation: While we’re a small, close-knit team, self-direction is essential. Whether packing the harvest truck the night before or refilling supplies without being asked, finding a rhythm and taking initiative are crucial.
  • Community-Minded: Respect for each individual on our farm team and the broader community is non-negotiable.
  • Positivity, Patience, Flexibility: These traits help us roll with the ups and downs of farming life.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience: One year or more of experience on a production farm will be prioritized, though we are willing to train on the job.
  • Physical Capacity: Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in all weather conditions
