Job Title: Activities Assistant
Department: Activities
Reports To: Activities Director

Position Purpose:

The primary purpose of this job position is to help plan, organize, develop and direct the operations of the Activities department in accordance with federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations, facility policies and as may be directed by the Administrator to ensure that an ongoing program of activities is established and maintained to meet the interests of each resident in accordance with their comprehensive assessment and plan of care.

Job Requirements

1. At a minimum, must be a high school graduate or have a GED; must have or obtain and maintain an active license at a minimum as a Therapeutic Recreational Therapist within 9 months of hire date; must obtain and maintain an active Food Handler’s Permit; must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

2. Prior activities related experience is preferred, with some of that experience in a long-term care facility;

3. Must provide all necessary documentation in accordance with the company’s new hire process to evidence eligibility for employment, including passing a criminal background check;

4. Must complete new hire orientation as required by company policy and participate in continuing education such as in-services, training, etc.;

5. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and work well with others;

6. Must possess excellent organizational, decision making and problem solving skills;

7. Must have a fun, creative and enthusiastic personality and be able to foster an interest in activities for the residents.

8. Must possess the ability to communicate proficiently in English, both orally and in writing;

9. Must be proficient in the use of technology, including and especially the use of computers;

10. Must be willing to learn and follow all federal, state and local laws and regulations as well as company policies and procedures and abide by the employee handbook, including but not limited to dress and grooming standards, time and attendance standards, drug and alcohol policy, respect and courtesy towards others, etc.;

11. Must have flexibility and availability to work outside of standard business hours, including on-call shifts, night shifts, weekends and holidays;

12. Must participate in and respond professionally to surveys and inspections conducted by government agencies;

13. Must be able to perform physical tasks associated with the standard work and essential functions of an activities director, including standing or sitting for extended periods, lifting/carrying in excess of 30 pounds, or be able to be reasonably accommodated for any limitations;

14. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress inherent to the position, including working daily with residents in the geriatric, mentally ill, dementia, and disabled populations;

15. Must be able to perform assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision and oversight and develop awareness for and a willingness to perform other tasks, as needed, without constant supervision;

16. Must help foster and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, cheerfulness, enthusiasm and compassion, giving residents the quality of service you would want to receive.

Summary of Principal Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities

1. Plan and direct activities, recruit outside performers, plan parties, provide games, books, videos, music and other leisure materials, assist with craft and projects and other activities. Assist residents in attending activities. Perform one-on-one individual activities with residents who do not attend facility-sponsored group activities.

2. Coordinate with the Activities Director, Administrator, medical and nursing staff and other departments in planning the monthly activity calendar, including coordinating transportation for outside activities with the facility transportation coordinator.

3. Ensure monthly activity calendars are put up for display each month and passed out to individual residents listing all activities that are scheduled.

4. Complete all activities related documentation in each resident medical record, including assessments, MDS assessments, progress notes, care plans, activity attendance records, etc.

5. Interview residents or resident representatives to obtain activity preferences and information to collaborate in planning objectives and goals of care in the facility.

6. Collaborate with activities consultant regarding resident and department issues and implement any recommended changes, including development of monthly activity calendar and development and revision of activity care plans.

7. Coordinate volunteer programs. This includes recruitment, monitoring and giving proper training to volunteers.

8. Coordinate with programs and partners in the community, including religious leaders, community centers, etc. to enable the residents to continue to participate in community activities that are important to their well-being.

9. Attend and participate in meetings and committees such as daily department head meetings, Resident Care Conferences, Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) meeting, Psychotropic Committee, Resident Council, etc.

10. Coordinate with the business office manager and resident advocate to complete shopping for residents to provide them with personal care items to assure their dignity and comfort during their stay.

11. Deliver personal mail to residents. Upon request, assist with letter writing, reading letters, etc.

12. Coordinate with the Administrator to understand and stay within the department budget, submit receipts, invoices, spend-down forms, etc.

13. Maintain a reference library of written material, laws, etc. necessary for complying with current standards and regulations and that will provide assistance in maintaining a quality activities program.

14. Attend and participate in continuing education programs to stay professionally informed.

15. Ensure activity areas and supplies are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner.

16. Order supplies and equipment for department as needed and use supplies efficiently to avoid waste.

17. Perform other job duties as may become necessary or as directed by your supervisor.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour
