Deckhand
Responsibilities
- Handles lines to moor towboats to wharves, tie up vessel to another vessel, or rig towing lines.
- Build and break tow by using lines, wires, ratchets and stationary winches.
- Perform a variety of tasks which include but not limited to standard housekeeping duties, painting, chipping, transferring rigging, vessel and barge maintenance, midstream fuel transfers, assisting in making bridges and locks, etc. These duties are performed in all types of weather, day and night, while the vessel is underway.
- Effectively handle cables, wires and lines to secure barges and other pieces of equipment.
- Loads or unloads material from barges and towboats.
- Ability to use standard hand tools to make repairs to equipment.
- Inspect equipment and notify crew members of safety concerns.
- Communicate clearly on a vhf radio.
Physical Capabilities
Must be able to perform the following:
- Walk a minimum of 2 miles per day.
- Transport equipment 60-100 pounds in weight.
- Use a ladder.
- Maintain communication with crew members.
- Work in all outdoor conditions.
Preferred Education and Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Prior deckhand experience.
- Prior experience in the marine or construction industry.
- OSHA 10- or 30-hour training preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
