River Valley Eye Professionals is currently seeking an individual for a full-time (32 Hours) Optometric Technician on our wonderful clinical team. Experience working in an eye care, optometric or ophthalmic, or healthcare setting is highly preferred!
Tentative Schedule: Full time - 32 to 36 hours per week (benefit eligible). Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday and Friday scheduling flexibility is mandatory, with ability to have closing responsibilities one night per week (Est. time of leave is 5:30 pm when closing).
This position is best suited to someone who is personable, reliable, and detail oriented. An ability to multi-task, work with people of all ages, and work well with a team is also essential.

The role of the Optometric Technician is to provide technical support to optometrist(s) and ophthalmologists. This includes patient work-up, pretesting, tonometry, post-operative, and other professional services to patients as prescribed by the doctor. As the functional liaison between patient and doctor, the Technician is responsible for communicating all patient questions and concerns to the patient’s doctor. Accurate procurement of patient history, diagnostic data, and follow-up is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Making patients feel welcome to the clinic
- Demonstrates expert ability in communicating with patients the purpose of the exam and all pertinent testing.
- Working up patients for the Optometrist: Acquiring history, visual acuity, gross visual fields by confrontation, ocular motility, pupil assessment, and intraocular pressure
- Operation and maintenance of all pretesting equipment including but not limited to:
- Lensometer
- Auto-refractor / keratometer
- iCare tonometer
- Retinal camera
- Automated visual field perimeter
- Corneal topographer
- Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT)
- Visual acuity tests
- Blood pressure cuff
- Pupilometer
- Optomap ultra-wide field imaging
- A-scan ultrasound biometer
- Corneal pachymeter
- Slit lamp biomicroscope
- Goldmann applanation tomometry
- Stocking and maintenance of all exam rooms
- Write up of spectacle and contact lens prescriptions per the provider’s specifications, as well as assisting with generation of medication prescriptions
- Assisting providers with minor medical procedures
- Manifest refractions
Competencies:
Communication Skills
The Technician must be able to effectively communicate the purpose of all testing with our patients in a manner that the patient understands. Conveying technical and medical terminology in layman terms is essential.
Technical Abilities
The Technician must be able to accurately measure and record all patient information and results of testing. Strict attention to detail relative to all testing and results is imperative.
Pace of the Environment
Must be able to work at a fast pace. An ability to effectively handle multiple tasks and patients at one time, while maintaining focus on the individual patient experience is necessary.
Consistency of Work
The Technician position requires consistent repetition of several technical tasks. An exhibited comfort with performance and accuracy of detail-oriented tasks and testing of this nature is required.
Team Player
As the patient liaison to the Optometrist, the Technician must exhibit the ability to work well within a team environment, supporting all systems of the practice and delivering an excellent patient experience.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma, or equivalent
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Office and general computer knowledge
- Minimum two years of previous work experience
Physical Requirements:
- This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, and filing cabinets.
- This position requires continual movement about the clinic to accompany patients and accomplish other necessary tasks.
- This position requires communicating with others effectively to exchange information.
- Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds
