Job Summary:
Using their own unique life experiences, the Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PR) will support and provide guidance to individuals who are seeking or undergoing recovery from substance use disorders (SUD). Under the guidance of a certified Peer Support Supervisor (PRPS) and other highly trained and educated professionals, the PR will function as a role model to peers; exhibit competency in personal recovery; serve as a peer advocate, and provide treatment and recovery resources, in addition to peer support services, for individuals under the care of River Valley Primary Care Services (RVPCS) in Franklin, Logan and Johnson County.

Duties/Responsibilities:
- 50% Support: Assist individuals in identifying personal goals for recovery through the use of one-on-one and group sessions. Support the individual in goal setting and development of a recovery plan by providing skills, strengths, supports and resources to aid them. Assist individuals with obtaining community resources for substance use treatment, recovery, housing, childcare and transportation; building social skills; education/employment opportunities; obtaining medical services; and other recovery-oriented activities. Assist individual in developing empowerment skills. Assist the individual in identifying personal and environmental obstacles to recovery, linking the individual to the recovery community, including inpatient and outpatient substance use services if needed, and serve as a personal guide and role model in management of personal and family recovery.
- 25% Education: Provide information for self-help and support groups, life skills, nutrition and strategies to promote wellness and recovery. Promote, offer and educate on multiple pathways to recovery. Independently or with periodic assistance of other treatment team members, utilize and share problem-solving techniques with individuals and groups. The PR will share their own recovery story and demonstrate what skills, strengths, supports and resources they have used to direct their own recovery. Promote the PR role and educate the general public on the importance of the position.
- 10% Teamwork: Work closely with the individual’s treatment team, family and community in determining the steps he or she may be interested in taking in order to achieve recovery goals and self-directed recovery. Communicate appropriate information thoroughly with individual and their treatment team. Advocate for individual and communicate their issues and concerns to the treatment team. Attend and participate in treatment team meetings, when needed, while remaining in a non-clinical PR role. Attend and participate in regular peer supervision meetings and continually work with a PRPS.
- 5% Documentation: Ensures clear and concise documentation of one-on-one and group sessions and interactions. Ensures any questionnaires and forms are complete, legible and accurate; maintains follow up notes of education, encounters, phone contacts and inpatient or outpatient visits. If possible, these documents should be separate from the individual’s medical record.
- 5% Conferences/Trainings: Attend and participate in conferences and trainings that support recovery and the objectives and goals of RVPCS. Participate in educational programs and professional activities to gain knowledge of current trends, practices and developments.
- 5% Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

- Ability to handle protected health information (PHI) in a manner consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PR).
- At least 2 years of success in personal long-term recovery from substance use.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Prolonged periods of standing/bending.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 15 lbs. at times.
- Travel as needed.
