Posting Title: Adult Education Instructor In The Jail Setting
Job Category: Part-Time
Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week. As Approved by the state. 11 month schedule, 2 week in July off; 2 weeks off winter holiday. Calendar will be provided.
Adult Education Teacher in the Jail Setting
The Adult Education Teacher will provide high-quality instruction to incarcerated individuals to help them achieve educational goals, such as earning a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, improving literacy, or developing English language skills. This position aims to support reintegration into society, improve self-sufficiency, and reduce recidivism through education. This position will be based in Floyd Co. and will cover County Jail classrooms in Floyd, Scott, and Jefferson Counties.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Instruction and Curriculum Development:
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons aligned with adult education standards, including
literacy, numeracy, and HSE preparation.
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, cultural backgrounds, and
educational levels of students.
- Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
- Assess students’ educational levels and learning needs using appropriate
diagnostic tools.
- Monitor and document student progress toward achieving educational and
language proficiency goals.
- Provide individualized support and constructive feedback.
- Classroom Management:
- Create a safe and respectful learning environment within the constraints of the jail
setting.
- Foster positive relationships to encourage active participation and reduce
classroom disruptions.
- Collaboration and Compliance:
- Work collaboratively with jail staff to ensure smooth coordination of classes and
adherence to security policies.
- Follow all institutional protocols, including safety and confidentiality regulations.
- Administrative Duties:
- Maintain accurate attendance and performance records.
- Report regularly on student outcomes and program effectiveness to supervisors.
- Participate in training and professional development related to adult education and
correctional education.
Qualifications:
- Education:
o Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field
- Experience:
o Teaching experience in adult education, ESL instruction, or a similar setting
required.
o Experience working in correctional education, alternative education, or with at-risk
populations preferred.
- Skills:
o Strong instructional and classroom management skills.
o Ability to adapt teaching strategies to diverse learning styles and levels.
o Cultural competence and sensitivity to the unique challenges faced by incarcerated
learners.
- Other requirements:
o Superior organizational, writing, and communication skills, along with creative
problem-solving abilities are essential.
o Resourcefulness, initiative and good judgment are essential.
o Ability to pass a background check and comply with jail-specific entry protocols.
o Commitment to upholding ethical and professional standards in a sensitive setting.
o Familiarity with technology such as Google Drive and Microsoft Office is
preferred.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 29 per week
