What are the responsibilities and job description for the Day Camp Counselor position at River Valley Special Recreation Association?
The Day Camp Counselor will work closely with teens and/or adults with disabilities in a recreational day camp setting, providing support and supervision during activities. The counselor’s primary role is to foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment, ensuring all participants have a positive and enriching experience. The counselor will work under the direct supervision of the Day Camp Site Coordinator and collaborate with other staff and volunteers to implement activities in line with the camp’s mission.

Essential Job Functions
- Active involvement in the implementation of activities, including setup and cleanup for programming; may involve transporting, loading and un-loading of materials.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of age-appropriate recreational activities tailored to the needs and abilities of teens with disabilities.
- Provide supervision of assigned group or individual and participate in all planned activities.
- Monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, including teens, staff, and volunteers.
- Follow behavior management strategies to address any challenges or issues that arise, ensuring a positive camp experience for all.
- Communicate effectively with teens, parents, and staff regarding any concerns, progress, or needs.
- Be alert to the physical, emotional, and social needs of each participant and provide appropriate support or guidance.
- Be alert and responsive to health and safety needs of the participants and staff.
- Work collaboratively with other staff members and volunteers to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Required to be in the pool, within arm’s length of participants at the pool for close supervision.
- Attend all training sessions and weekly staff meetings as required.
- Ensure that the facility/program site as well as any equipment is properly maintained.
- Read, understand, and abide by all RVSRA policies and procedures.
- Regular and predictable on-site attendance.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- No formal experience required; minimum one-year experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred; working knowledge of disabilities.
- Must be 16 years of age or older and able to perform the job functions independently of others.
- Availability to commit to assigned work times.
- Must be able to communicate effectively and demonstrate teamwork skills.
- Must pass a criminal background checks in compliance with Illinois state statute (70 ILCS 1205/8-23)
Immediate Supervisor: Day Camp Site Coordinator
Supervisor Duties: N/A
Hours of Work: Part-time, non-exempt position. This position is seasonal, working approximately 26 hours per week in June and July. Work hours are Mon- Thurs from 8:45 AM to 3:15 PM.
