After-School Program (K-5th) Group Leader
Riverdale Neighborhood House, Inc. (RNH) is of, by, and for its local community. Our mission is to strengthen our community in the Northwest Bronx by delivering programs and ensuring access to resources that build bonds, create networks, and promote equity across generational, cultural, racial and economic lines. We work with a vibrant, diverse community of over 50,000 residents who live in an area bordered by the Hudson River, Van Cortlandt Park, Manhattan and Yonkers. RNH provides a wide range of programming anchored in regular needs assessments of our community. Today, RNH offers no-cost pre-school education and free and low-cost after-school programs for children aged 2-13. Activities for high school students include internships, college advising, leadership development, and recreation. Adults participate in enrichment classes, community events, and volunteer programs. The volunteer-run Telephone Reassurance Program supports homebound older adults. To address food insecurity (1 in 5 households locally), RNH manages a mutual-aid fridge, an urban farm, and a farmstand.
General Job Description:
The RNH Afterschool Program is a dynamic program providing after-school activities for K-5 grade students in the Northwest Bronx. We aim to offer a safe, enriching, and engaging environment for students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and grow as individuals.
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Group Leader to join our team. The Group Leader will be responsible for leading a group of elementary school (K-5th) students in various activities, ensuring their safety and well-being, and creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere. This role requires a passion for working with youth, strong leadership skills, and the ability to facilitate engaging and educational activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage a group of elementary students during after-school program hours.
- Plan, organize, and lead a variety of activities including academic support, arts and crafts, sports, and cultural enrichment.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all students at all times.
- Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages student participation and growth.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff members.
- Assist in the development and implementation of program curriculum and activities.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance and participation.
- Provide support and mentorship to students, helping them to develop social and emotional skills.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in education, child development, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience working with elementary children in a recreational or educational setting.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to plan and implement engaging and age-appropriate activities.
- Commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all students.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team and community.
- Commitment to the mission and values of the After School program and RNH
- Sense of humor and curiosity and ability to work in changing environment
- Proficiency in Google Workplace (particularly Docs & Sheets)
- Spanish proficiency preferred
- Successful Background Check and State Central Registry clearances required
- Physical requirements include standing, walking, and participating in various activities with students.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 1:30pm-6pm (School days off and breaks are additional hours).
Pay Rate $18 per hour
