BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the supervision of the Vice President/Dean/Director/Project Director, serves students through Extended Opportunity Programs and Services, Matriculation. MESA Program and other counseling services which do not require the professional competencies of a credentialed counselor.

PROVIDES WORK OR LEAD DIRECTION TO:
Short-Term employee(s) and/or Work Study students.

Education:
EDUCATION:
An associate degree from an accredited institution is required. Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Experience:
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience in a community college system serving students in extended opportunity programs, matriculation services, or other counseling services is required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Policies and procedures in higher education, transfer programs available for students, and matriculation requirements.

ABILITY TO:
Understand, interpret and apply college policies, rules and regulations; use a computer; understand oral and written instructions; deal effectively with a diverse socio-ethnic college community; communicate in a friendly and helpful manner; maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, staff and the community; understand student needs and make appropriate referrals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1. Assists students with the development of individual first semester educational plans including career goals, general education, major, and transfer and college requirements.
2. Under guidance of a Counselor, verifies and approves course selections by students which are best suited to their college majors or transfer requirements in correlation with assessment scores or by prescription of the counselor.
3. Provides guidance information related to college rules and regulations, policies and procedures;
assists students in the enrollment application process; provides preliminary transcript assessment.
4. Provides articulation information to students; provide information regarding state college and universities, university system campuses and private institutions.
5. May participate with initial intake of students; reviews verification; and discusses services available for special programs.
6. Conducts general follow-up via telephone and e-mail related to inquiries received
7. Reviews and prepares files, transcripts, correspondence and reports.
8. Sets up and maintains electronic database, files, documents, and student records.
9. Plans and implements a variety of workshops on topics associated with student success and career planning.
10. Collaborates with a variety of college support and academic services such as Counseling, Admissions
& Records, Tutorial Services, Financial Aid, Disabled Student Services, EOP&S, and specialized programs to maximize resources and services to students.
11. Conducts a variety of recruitment activities; including college tours; presents presentations regarding programs and services; develops community relationships; develops flyers, newsletters and brochures; develops e-mail messages; may assist in recruiting students from high schools.
12. Coordinates program efforts and educational options with appropriate organizations.
13. Issues grant aid applications; collects and verifies information for eligibility; coordinates with
Financial Services for Distribution of funds to awarded recipients; and issues congratulatory letters.
14. Establishes appointments for students wanting to meet with university representatives or with a transfer counselor.
15. Provides work direction to student and short-term workers.
16. Attends committee, staff, and counseling meetings and workshops.
17. Participates in District-provided in-service training programs.
18. Attends regional and national conferences and trainings.
19. Maintains a friendly, supportive atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and the public.
20. Performs other duties, related to the position, as assigned.

SALARY: Salary grades consist of nine steps. A new employee is normally placed on Step 1 of the grade. Changes in step placement take place on the first day of the first month following the anniversary date of attaining permanent classified employee status until the maximum of the grade is reached.

HOLIDAYS: There are 13 holidays observed each year. A pro-rata reduction will be made for employees working less than full-time and less than twelve months.

VACATION: Employees are granted 12 days of vacation per year through the first five years of service to the District; 15 days after completion of five continuous years of service to the District; 20 days after completion of ten continuous years of service to the District; and 22 days after completion of 15 continuous years of service to the District. This computation is based on full-time, twelve-month employment. A pro-rata reduction will be made for employees working less than full-time and less than twelve months.

SICK LEAVE: One day of sick leave for each month of service is granted. This is based on full-time, twelve-month
employment. A pro-rata reduction will be made for employees working less than full-time and less than twelve
months. There is no limit to the number of days of sick leave which may be accrued.

FRINGE BENEFITS: The District provides a health and welfare benefit package for employees and legal qualifying dependents. Those employees working less than full-time and less than twelve months will receive a pro-rata share of the benefit package. The dollar value of the package is a subject of negotiation between the District and the Bargaining Unit.

The work location and assignment within a job classification is determined by the District and may be subject to change.
