Riverside Healthcare is seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable Lactation Consultant to join our Nursery team in Kankakee, Illinois. The Lactation Consultant will play a vital role in supporting new mothers and their infants by providing expert guidance on breastfeeding and infant nutrition. This position requires a strong commitment to promoting breastfeeding as a key component of maternal and infant health, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals and families.
Essential Duties
- Assess and evaluate breastfeeding practices and challenges for mothers and infants in the nursery.
- Provide one-on-one consultations and education for new mothers regarding breastfeeding techniques, positioning, and milk supply management.
- Develop individualized care plans based on the needs of mothers and infants, ensuring continuity of care and support.
- Offer group education sessions on breastfeeding topics, including benefits, techniques, and common concerns.
- Collaborate with nurses, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers.
- Maintain accurate records of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in compliance with hospital policies.
- Stay current with best practices, research, and guidelines in lactation support and infant nutrition, incorporating evidence-based approaches into practice.
- Advocate for breastfeeding-friendly policies and practices within the healthcare setting and the broader community.
- Team member will maintain annual education requirements

Blood and Body Fluids : Frequent contact with IV devices and high potential for contact with contaminated body fluids (blood, vomitus, stool and amniotic fluid) does create a high risk. However, appropriate usage of needleless IV system, universal precautions, and protective equipment should greatly minimize risk.
