Summary
The Nurse is responsible for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management and/or referral activities. The nurse serves as the direct link between physicians, families, community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care of students. The nurse also provides relevant instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, staff, and others concerning health-related issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Collaborate with school staff members, parents, and students to address health needs of students and supervise personnel or renders first aid care to students in cases of accidents or illnesses.
Act as an advocate for students and family in interdisciplinary collaboration including IEP conferences as appropriate.
Participate in school Emergency/Crisis plans.
Conceptualize and communicate the nursing role in the school setting as an integral part of the community.
Identify community agencies as resources for health care needs of students and/or families.
Apply appropriate theory as a basis for decision making in the school setting for nursing management of: common acute and chronic physical conditions of childhood and adolescence, child and adolescent injuries, child abuse and neglect, adolescent pregnancy, childhood and adolescent substance abuse, poverty and racism and their effects on child development and child health, environmental health issues.
Interpret the immunization law to school personnel and parents; assess students’ immunization status and notifies parents of deficiencies.
Share responsibility with other staff members in screening those students who are ill or should leave the classroom, and follows procedures for excluding students with communicable diseases.
Conduct and/or facilitate screening exams to identify health deficits of students including vision and hearing screening, scoliosis screening, kindergarten pre-enrollment, dental screening, and preschool screening.
Observe for deviations from normal growth and counsel with parents and students when appropriate.
Conduct and/or facilitates screening exams for staff including immunization, demography, tine testing and hepatitis B.
Intervene as guided by the nursing care plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness and effect rehabilitation.
Assess student responses to nursing actions in order to revise the database, nursing diagnosis and nursing care plan and to determine progress made toward goal achievement.
Supervise the administration of medication and the administration of medical procedures as prescribed by state guidelines.
Recognize and report any health or safety hazards to the site administrator.
Identify health problems and need for new programs and contributes to a comprehensive school health program.
Develop and implement health policies in collaboration with other school nurses, administration, and the Board of Education.
Assist in alternate or supplemental funding sources for health or health related programs as needed.
Supervise the maintenance of assigned supplies and equipment.
Provide for the appropriate accessibility, recording and utilization of confidential information related to school health and health related services.
Obtain written authorization for release (from the parent in the case of a minor) of information from the student health record to outside agencies.
Maintain and/or supervise the accurate documentation and maintenance of information, records, and reports:
Health Records for each student (separate from students’ academic records and in a locked file)
Incident Reports
Daily logs of illness/injuries
Annual Immunization Report, CD 31
Annual Health Services Report
Emergency info for staff members
Other reports as needed
Support health and safety instruction in the school.
Provide individual health teaching and counseling for and with students as appropriate.
Promote the application of health principles within all areas of school services (food services, custodial, etc.).
Communicate with staff and parents regarding individual student health concerns and universal precautions.
Comply with all Riverview School Board of Education policies.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.
