Job Overview

The Underwriting Manager will oversee the daily operations of our underwriting team, ensuring that all mortgage loan applications are evaluated accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory requirements. This role requires a deep understanding of mortgage underwriting, strong leadership abilities, and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards throughout the underwriting process.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Manage the Underwriting Team: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee Loan Underwriting: Ensure all mortgage loans are underwritten in accordance with company policies, investor guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
• Quality Assurance: Implement and maintain quality control processes to ensure accurate and consistent underwriting decisions. Conduct regular audits and reviews to identify and address any discrepancies.
• Compliance Management: Stay up-to-date with federal, state, and local regulations affecting mortgage underwriting. Ensure the underwriting team adheres to all compliance requirements and company policies.
• Performance Monitoring: Track and analyze key performance metrics (KPIs) for the underwriting department. Identify trends and areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
• Risk Management: Assess and manage the credit risk of mortgage loans, ensuring that underwriting decisions align with the company’s risk tolerance and business objectives.
• Training & Development: Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities for underwriters to keep them informed of industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices.
• Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including processing, closing, and sales, to ensure a seamless and positive experience for our customers.
• Customer Service: Handle escalated issues and work to resolve any underwriting-related concerns with customers or partners in a timely and professional manner.
• Reporting: Prepare and present regular reports to senior management on underwriting performance, risks, and opportunities for improvement.

Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum of 4 years of mortgage underwriting experience, with at least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
• Expertise: In-depth knowledge of mortgage products, underwriting guidelines, investor requirements, and regulatory compliance (e.g., FHA, VA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac).
• Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead and develop a high-performing team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
• Analytical Abilities: Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess complex financial information and make sound underwriting decisions.
• Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality.
• Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with internal teams, customers, and external partners.
• Technological Proficiency: Proficient in using mortgage loan origination systems (LOS) and other underwriting tools and technologies.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field is preferred. Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Residential Underwriter) are a plus.
