The Director of Transportation will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of transportation operations within the company. This role requires a strategic thinker with extensive experience in supply chain management, transportation planning, and warehouse operations. The successful candidate will possess strong leadership skills, exceptional analytical abilities, and a proven record of accomplishment driving operational efficiency and cost savings.
Requirements:- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring that all transportation activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations, such as Department of Transportation (DOT) standards, safety protocols, and environmental laws.
- Fleet Management: Ensure optimal performance of the fleet, including maintenance, fuel management, vehicle allocation, and inspection schedules.
- Compliance and Safety: Ensure all transportation activities meet regulatory and safety standards, including Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, safety audits, and inspections.
- Budgeting and Cost Control: Develop and manage budgets for transportation operations, including cost-control initiatives to improve efficiency.
- Data Analytics and Reporting: Monitor performance metrics (KPIs) such as delivery times, costs, and asset utilization. Generate reports for upper management on transportation efficiency and performance.
- Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategies for optimizing the transportation network and improving service quality. This might include technology upgrades, process improvements, and partnerships.
- Team Leadership and Development: Recruit, train, and manage the transportation team, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Customer and Stakeholder Relations: Work closely with customers, suppliers, and other departments to address transportation needs, resolve issues, and ensure a high standard of service.
- Technology Integration: Oversee the implementation of Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and other technology to streamline operations, enhance tracking, and improve communication.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks related to transportation, such as accidents, delays, or regulatory issues, and develop contingency plans.
- Operations Management:
- Ensure smooth operations, including the scheduling, routing and dispatching of vehicles. Also managing loading and unloading process in freight operations.
- Responsible for managing staff, such as drivers, dispatchers, and logistics coordinators. Oversee hiring, training, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
- Ensure that all transportation activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations, including vehicle maintenance, driver qualifications, and cargo handling.
- A significant part of the job involves overseeing the company's fleet of vehicles, ensuring they are maintained, adequately utilized, and compliant with safety standards. This can also involve working with leasing or asset management teams.
- Work with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and other logistics software to track and optimize routes, monitor shipments, and maintain vehicle status.
- Develop strategies to improve efficiency, implement new technologies (like route optimization tools), and make critical decisions regarding expansion, cost reduction, or sustainability.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in supply chain management or related field; master's degree preferred but not required
- 3-6 years of experience in transportation, supply chain management, and warehousing.
- Proven record of accomplishment of optimizing transportation networks and reducing costs.
- Strong analytical and negotiation skills.
- Deep understanding of transportation regulations and compliance requirements.
- Experience with warehouse management and transportation management systems.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
