Principal Duties & Responsibilities


  • Handle all inventories of claim files which include investigation, coverage, evaluation, resolution, and litigation management.
  • Responsible for the most complex auto claims at the company.
  • Set case resolution strategies, including independent handling of mediations and trials in complex auto claims.
  • Develop and implement negotiation strategies and identify claims where trial is appropriate.
  • Select, retain, and direct appropriate defense counsel on litigated cases including with witness preparation in advance of key depositions.
  • Collaboratively communicate with the Major Case Unit's underwriting partners on industry trends, case law, and statutory developments that may impact their respective product lines.
  • Assist underwriters in review of submissions of policies/bonds as needed.
  • Lead in special projects and other duties as needed.


Education & Experience


  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in business administration, insurance, or a related field; and 8 years of relevant legal or insurance related experience with commercial transportation claims or a Juris Doctorate with 5 years of transportation/insurance defense experience.
  • Experience in handling high-exposure trucking, bus, and/or commercial auto bodily injury claims and litigation in various jurisdictions across the United States.


Knowledge, Skills, & Competencies


  • Ability to use analytical methods in the claim examining processes to handle the most complex commercial auto and transportation claims in the company and identify where trial is appropriate.
  • Ability to generate innovative solutions within the claims department including the development of sophisticated negotiation strategies.
  • Ability to proactively manage outside counsel to aggressively defend litigation, including motion practice, discovery, and witness preparation for key insured depositions.
  • Ability to author and present large loss reports to company management.
  • Ability to communicate findings and recommendations on claim matters including assisting underwriters in review of policy/bond submissions.


Compensation Overview

The base salary range for the position is listed below. Please note that the base salary is only one component of our robust total rewards package at RLI. The salary offered will take into account a number of factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, scope & responsibilities of the role, qualifications/credentials, talent availability & specialization, as well as business needs. The below range may be modified in the future.

Base Pay Range

$108,348.00 - $157,917.00
