Organization
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Triangle provides a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill or injured children from across North Carolina and beyond who are receiving specialized medical care at Triangle NC area hospitals. With 103 bedrooms, Ronald McDonald Houses located in or near UNC, Duke, and WakeMed Children’s Hospitals provide residential hospitality, meals, and social support while keeping families together during their child’s medical crisis, easing their financial burdens and providing stability. Job Title: Overnight Family Services Specialist
Location: Durham House
Department: Operations
Reports To: Family Services Manager
FLSA Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt – 10 hours weekly
Job Purpose:
The on-site, overnight staff employee is responsible for coverage of the House to be available to respond to any emergency, situation, and/or issue that may arise during the shift hours. Staff complete nightly security checks, noting any facility repairs in the maintenance log, administrative tasks, shared housekeeping, and other duties assigned by the Family Services Manager. The overnight schedule is Friday’s from 10 PM to 8 AM.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Family Services Manager who sets direction, reviews completed work with the employee and evaluates overall performance in accordance with the mission, policies, and procedures set by the organization. In the case of an emergency, the Family Services Manager must be contacted immediately, and in the absence of the Family Services Manager, the Senior Director of House Operations.
Requirements:
- Support the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Triangle and work in accordance with the Commitment to Excellence.
- Cultivate an atmosphere of healing and safety for all guests by providing prompt and respectful family service, maintaining facilities in a clean and working order, offering a listening ear as needed, and issuing reminders of appropriate guest behavior when necessary.
- Responsible for the understanding and implementation of Family Services policies & procedures, including check-ins, check-outs, and all emergency plans.
- Cover and provide support at the front desk, including welcoming visitors, answering the phone, and assisting guest families.
- Maintain careful records in the Guest Database and complete all necessary documentation accurately and efficiently, according to House procedures. Offer support to volunteers, including answering questions as needed.
- Greet and thank donors, receive donations, and ensure that donations are stored and documented in the appropriate places.
- Coverage – Additional -This position requires schedule flexibility to include occasional evening, weekend, and holiday

Skills & Qualifications
- H.S. diploma and two years related work experience required.
- Strong computers skills, particularly in Microsoft Office and database programs
- Valid Driver’s License
- Spanish speaking ability is preferred.
Working Conditions:
Position is part-time with primary hours falling during the evening and overnight hours scheduled. The Overnight Staff will be compensated for all overtime hours (i.e., hours more than 40 hours per week) at a rate consistent with applicable laws. Primarily indoor services in a home-like environment with shared housekeeping duties and light lifting. Ability to access all areas of the House and grounds, including going up and down stairs. Travel for various activities both local and national may be required.
Physical Requirements:
- Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
- Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
- Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

- Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
- Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles
