Principal Purpose of Job: Tests and inspects products during various stages of the production processes to determine and maintain the quality and reliability of products by performing the duties below, which include but are not limited to:
Responsibilities and Duties:
Coordinates with the Logistics and Plant Managers to ensure that all rush lab work is completed. Prioritizes testing of orders based on the shipping schedule.- Tests all products per work instructions, part prints, and customer standards/specifications.
- Performs all preparation of samples, including cutting, mounting, sanding, polishing, and etching.
- Prepares the etchant chemical solution and maintains the chemical supply stock.
- Performs metallurgical analysis per customer requirements on prepared specimens to ensure conformity. These metallurgical methods include but are not limited to: Total Case Depth, Effective Case Depth, Surface Hardness, Core Hardness, Microhardness, and Microstructure Analysis. Microstructure Analysis includes but is not limited to identifying and quantifying the amount of: Decarburization, Carbides, Retained Austenite, and Intergranular Oxidation. Must be able to visually recognize the normal microstructure (tempered martensite, bainite, etc.) of samples when required. Must be able to take and label microphotographs per customer requirements.
- Responsible for pulling samples, performing all PPAP testing requirements, and compiling the data for the Quality Manager's use.
- Daily verifies and records results of all testing equipment against the known standard. Removes machines that fail verification from use and schedules service from approved suppliers or notifies maintenance personnel of machine malfunctions.
- Coordinates with the Quality and Plant Managers quarterly to complete the test equipment calibration log. Schedules machine calibration according to the log schedule and files all machine certifications.
- Identifies nonconforming product and verifies in-process nonconformances identified by the Furnace Operator or Assistant. Responds to issues according to the nonconforming procedure.
- Certifies product and distributes certifications via email to the customer.
- Directly responsible for the organization, storage, and retention of all mounted specimens.
- Inventories all lab supplies and requisitions supplies when needed.
- Cooperates with any audits conducted internally or externally to assess compliance with designated procedures and work instructions.
- Maintains a clean work area to facilitate a safe, clean work environment. Follow all designated safety standards.
- Complies with all the rules and regulations established in RMT's Employee Handbook and Quality Manual. Follows all directions from the Quality Manager and other management personnel.
- Displays results attainment by promptly finishing work, being cost conscious, persistent in meeting in-process deadlines, accurate in work situations, and displays technical excellence.
Qualifications:
Minimum 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting, or equivalent combined education and experience. Experience in a metallurgical lab is preferred.- Must possess the ability to read and interpret documents, procedure manuals, and safety literature.
- Ability to multitask with strong organizational skills.
- Must possess significant written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate well with others.
- Must be fluent in the utilization of Microsoft-based programs, Excel, and Word.
Education: High school diploma and/or GED equivalent.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, handle/feel, climb, balance, and kneel. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The plant environment can include extremes in temperature.
