RN Operating Room Circulator - General Case and Complex Cardiovascular (CVOR)
Description of Position :
Responsible to plan, implement, and evaluate care for surgical patients including complex vascular, cardiovascular, and cardiothoracic procedures. To include open heart procedures. Ensures patient care, safety standards, and documentation is carried out according to AORN standards, recommended practices, and guidelines. Receives direction from : Providers, Anesthesia providers, Nurse Manager. Gives direction to : Surgical Technician, Sterile Processing Instrument Technician.
Essential Function : PATIENT ASSESSMENT
a) Ensures appropriate supplies and equipment are available for patient's procedure.
b) Determines through interview process any special needs or positioning required.
c) Determines all forms and required documentation is available on chart.
Essential Function : EFFECTIVE AND PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION
a) Demonstrates effective listening, written and oral skills to effectively communicate with patients, providers, and allied staff.
b) Communicates promptly any abnormalities or pertinent information to provider and / or anesthesia provider.
c) Communicates with charge nurse as necessary to maintain efficient patient flow.
d) Reports pertinent procedure details of intraoperative phase and patient's condition to PACU / Stepdown nurse.
e) Documents intraoperative phase accurately and clearly.
f) Documents supplies used during procedure.
g) Updates provider preference cards.
Essential Function : PATIENT CARE
a) Maintains universal precautions and complies with all OSHA and Clinic standards and safety guidelines.
b) Demonstrates proper handling of surgical specimens.
c) Follows AORN standards in room setup, patient positioning, surgical site preparation, "time out" protocol, and monitoring for breaks in sterile technique.
d) Assists anesthesia provider during induction and emergence from anesthesia.
Essential Function : PATIENT / STAFF EDUCATION
a) Prepares patient for surgical and anesthesia experience during pre-op contact.
b) Assists with the learning needs of students, orientees and staff members.
c) Participates in Quality Improvement process by assisting in collecting data and implementing changes in nursing care to effect needed improvements.
