What are the responsibilities and job description for the Civil Engineer I/II - Construction position at Road Commission for Oakland County?
Job Duties: Under the supervision of the construction or project engineer, acts as project engineer-in-training overseeing smaller, less complex road construction projects.
- This position is responsible for and oversees construction of a project from bid letting to final payment of the contract.
- Coordinates and participates in pre-construction meetings.
- Assigns and oversees the work of construction inspectors to ensure the construction materials and construction methods are in compliance with contract drawing and specifications.
- Frequently visits construction sites to observe and document progress or problems.
- Prepares recommendations to modify project plans and contract where site conditions have changed, quantities have exceeded plan quantity and/or problems have developed.
- Oversees and coordinates the work of a survey crew in properly layout and perform grade staking.
- Authorizes contractor’s pay estimates and other documentation for contractor based on the work performed and tabulation of materials used.
- Maintains close liaison with permits, traffic safety, highway maintenance, design, and right-of-way regarding utility coordination, interpretation, implementation, and possible changes to a project.
- Must perform duties in a safe, professional, and courteous manner to promote a positive image of the Road Commission for Oakland County.
- Requires a daily schedule that supports RCOC hours of operation.
- Regular and predictable onsite job attendance is an essential function of this position.
Special experience/education: This position requires:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Construction Engineering and a demonstrated work history with progressively greater project responsibilities including road construction methods and terminology, contract procedures and federal aid paperwork.
- Proven ability to operate essential software, including Field Manager and Microsoft Office Suite.
- MDOT Office Technician Certification, Storm Water Construction Operator Certification, LCP Tracker Certification and Prevailing Wage Certification, or the ability to obtain at the conclusion of the first available class.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver’s license.

Salary : $61,372 - $73,585
