Pay Range: Hiring/Starting pay range is $32.96 - $42.02/hourly, based on experience.

Position Summary

Manage and lead a team of up to 14 personnel, including but not limited to Mechanics, Technicians, Service Workers, and Bus Cleaners. Provides shift turnover to succeeding Lead Mechanic. Ensures needed parts are ordered and monitors orders for the timely repair of vehicles. Communicates with the Shop Foreman about any issues. Performs general and complex mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, and inspections on RFTA buses and automotive equipment. Not only with conventionally fueled vehicles, but also with very specialized alternative fueled vehicles including Biofuels, Compressed Natural Gas, and Battery Electric vehicles. This includes conducting detailed inspections, as well as removing, repairing, and replacing parts and components as necessary. Uses tools and equipment in a safe and professional manner. Provides varied support to the Operations Department.

Essential Job Duties

  • Operates vehicles in strict compliance with RFTA policies, directives, and procedures and all Federal and Colorado traffic laws and regulations.
  • Reviews daily projects and assign work to meet objectives set by the Director of Maintenance and/or Shop Foreman. Assigns and monitors work in Trapeze EAM to transit mechanics, transit technicians, service workers, and bus cleaners.
  • Monitors the status of vehicles to ensure adequate assets are available at appropriate times for various service levels for the Operations Department.
  • Maintains and repairs CNG and Diesel engines, EV Systems, chassis, air and electrical systems, automatic transmissions, and drive trains. Work may be done at the system, unit, component, or part level.
  • Supervises all shift personnel and provides detailed turnover to the following shift for seamless transition on current/pending work and projects.
  • Informs Shop Foreman of issues that arise on a daily basis. Ensures supervisors are aware of any relevant events or issues with employees, equipment, or performance.
  • Troubleshoots vehicle systems, identifying causes of maintenance problems. Recommends and performs subsequent repairs.
  • Assists subordinates with problem resolution and troubleshooting. Monitors parts and equipment orders as needed; participates in resolving labor or disciplinary problems.
  • Ensures proper vehicle assignments are made per vehicle pull-out sheets and coordinates with the Operations Supervisors on duty.
  • Responds to road calls, and service calls and operates service trucks. Provides support to Operations Department for vehicle exchanges, vehicle repairs, or vehicle recovery as needed.
  • Documents all actions taken in a professional manner in written and /or electronic format. Completes all necessary forms (e.g., accident, incident, spill reports, core and warranty information and etc.). Reviews the documentation and work orders of all subordinates, verifying all part requests and charges.
  • Regularly inspects vehicles as scheduled (e.g. State of Good Repair, Safety, and DOT inspections), identifies defects, and makes repairs as needed. Performs regular preventative maintenance on RFTA vehicles. Including preventative maintenance of non-high voltage systems on Battery Electric and Hybrids vehicles.
  • Documents employee issues, incidents, and unusual occurrences to the Shop Foreman or to the Director of Maintenance if Shop Foreman is not available.
  • Participates in building safety inspections and training meetings to educate subordinates and promote an atmosphere of safety.
  • Adheres to and objectively enforces RFTA policies, procedures, standards, and conduct expectations to the highest degree in order to lead team/department by own example of professional behavior. Ensures department and organizational goals take precedence over personal motivations and needs and promotes an atmosphere of accountability, teamwork, and high-quality work among subordinates.
  • Actively and continuously improves professional knowledge, skills, and abilities by participating in routine training sessions and educational seminars relevant to the position and job duties.
  • Completes assigned safety and compliance training in RFTA-sponsored Learning Management Software on a timely basis. Incomplete training required for the position will adversely affect the annual performance review. This includes all RFTA-required training programs.
  • Serves as the primary contact, and first responder for the Maintenance Department during a serious accident, incident, or event.
  • Responsible to maintain the work area in a neat and orderly manner.

Other Job Duties

  • Provides support for the Operations Department (e.g., bus pullout, vehicle exchanges, vehicle recovery, snow plowing, and sanding).
  • Occasionally assists or serves as a fill-in for Service Workers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Adheres to and actively works towards the personal, department, and organizational goals and performance standards-detailed performance indicators are discussed in detail in a separate departmental document.
  • Advanced computer skills and data entry ability.
  • Advanced ability to use diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others and abide by the department code of conduct.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical systems, mechanical principles of diesel and gas engines, transmissions, fluid and electrical systems, power trains, air systems, braking, chassis, suspension, and HVAC.
  • Strong electrical diagnostic skills; including an efficient understanding of Vansco, Dinex, Siemens Electric Drive Systems, XALT Energy Storage Systems, Vanner Battery Monitoring Systems, Thermo King HVAC systems, and Allison Electric Drives.
  • Solid knowledge of NFPA 70E Electrical Safety, OSHA, and safe working practices and procedure.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with employees, the general public, emergency response personnel, and professional, legal, and governmental personnel.
  • Proficient ability to identify differences in high voltage and low voltage systems on Battery Electric and Hybrid vehicles.
  • Solid ability to use prudent judgment and problem-solving skills to make reasonable and appropriate decisions and recommendations.
  • Solid ability to effectively manage time and workload, which includes prioritizing, organizing, and following through on a variety of tasks, assignments, and projects to meet deadlines.
  • Solid ability to organize and schedule work assignments, set work priorities, and direct, guide, and motivate the work of subordinates
  • Solid knowledge of operating theory, failure diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance practices common to buses and heavy vehicles.
  • Solid knowledge of electrical and gas welding.
  • Highly skilled with electronic/electrical test equipment, common mechanic hand tools, pneumatic tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Solid skills with common mechanic hand tools, pneumatic tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Solid ability to read, understand and use maintenance, repair, and parts manuals, computer-based maintenance information systems, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, service updates, and troubleshooting guides.

Education

High school education or equivalent. Strong ability to read, write and speak English. Training and certifications are necessary to perform role responsibility.

Experience

5 years of on-the-job experience in transit maintenance, or a combination of a Vocational / Technical degree in a related field (diesel, automotive, etc.), and 2 years on-the-job experience in transit maintenance including Leadership Training.

License & Certification Requirements- (must possess and maintain)

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License and be able to obtain a Colorado State Commercial Driver's License with a B-P2 rating within two (2) weeks of beginning employment.
  • If employee possesses an out of state driver's license, they must provide Colorado license within 90 days of hire.
  • Valid/ current DOT Physical Exam Certificate.
  • ASE Certifications - H4 & H8 (Must possess and maintain within 6 months of employment).
  • Air Conditioning Section 608 Refrigerant Certification.
  • Air Conditioning Section 609 Refrigerant Certification.
  • CNG FSI Certification (Must possess and maintain within 1 year of employment).
  • Underground Storage Tank (UST) Certification (Class C).
  • RFTA Forklift Certification.
  • CDOT Annual Inspections Certification (Must possess and maintain within 2 years of employment).
  • CDOT Brake Inspector's Certification (Must possess and maintain within 2 years of employment).
  • CNG Fuel Certification.

Working Conditions

  • Position requires extremely strenuous physical work involving objects in excess of 100 pounds occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently. Works in conditions where up to 650 volts DC and up to 480 volts 3-phase AC is present. Works in a typical automotive/industrial environment. Encounters exposure to moving equipment and vehicles, and related fumes and chemicals. Works in all weather conditions, at varied shifts, and on roadways in the event of a breakdown or accident. Responds to serious accidents. Comes in contact with bodily fluids on a regular basis. Works on a regular basis with hazardous and toxic materials (e.g., toxic paints, thinner, and other bodywork supplies) strictly adhering to all safety rules and regulations pertaining to their use, storage, and proper disposal. Personal Protective Equipment provided.
  • Must be able to pass a fitness for duty test and drug and alcohol prior to employment.
  • RFTA Vehicle Maintenance Department operates two locations 24 hrs. /7 days a week 365 days a year. All employees are expected to work weekends, holidays, and any shift as necessary.
  • Most shifts are 10 ½ hours with non-traditional starting times; generally, the morning shift (6:00 AM), afternoon (2:00 PM), or graveyard (10:00 PM). There are no conventional Mon-Fri 8-5 shifts.
