Job Description: Director of Information Technology
Location: Foggy Bottom, Washington, DC – onsite 3 days a week/ 35-hour work week
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and proactive IT Director to lead our nonprofit organization’s IT operations and strategy. Based in Washington, D.C., the ideal candidate will be onsite three days a week and spearhead the development, implementation, and maintenance of our technology infrastructure. This role calls for a balance of technical expertise, strong interpersonal skills, and a collaborative, servant-leader mindset. The Director will oversee the IT department, manage vendors, and work with organizational leadership to define and execute the nonprofit’s long-term IT goals.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Oversight and Leadership
- Develop and oversee the organization’s IT strategy in alignment with business objectives.
- Translate business needs into measurable IT goals and drive execution.
- Design and implement IT policies, standards, and training programs to ensure efficiency and security.
- Advocate for technological innovations to streamline functions and enhance productivity.
IT Operations, Systems, and Infrastructure
- Oversee network infrastructure, ensuring availability, performance, and security of hardware, software, and data.
- Manage enterprise systems, including Zoom, Microsoft 365, SonicWall Firewalls, and Azure administration.
- Supervise critical hardware/software deployments, patching, antivirus updates, and system security.
- Proactively manage risks and mitigate vulnerabilities through the organization’s cybersecurity platform.
- Implement disaster recovery and business continuity plans to safeguard organizational operations.
- Maintain up-to-date documentation of IT-related assets, certifications (e.g., SSL), and service agreements.
Project and Vendor Management
- Lead IT projects, from planning to implementation, and manage associated budgets.
- Cultivate and manage external relationships with IT vendors and consultants.
- Conduct competitive bidding and market analyses for IT solutions where relevant.
Team Management and Support
- Supervise a team of two IT staff, fostering growth and development.
- Provide hands-on technical troubleshooting, including Zoom meeting support and assisting end-users in a calm, professional manner.
- Educate staff and implement training programs for non-technical users, including executives, on new tools and processes.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Participate in senior leadership and management meetings, advising on IT needs and objectives.
- Collaborate across departments to integrate IT into strategic initiatives and goals.
Must-Have Competencies and Skills
Technical Proficiency
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Azure, O365, SonicWall firewalls, Zoom or TEAMS, IMIS or other EMS systems, and project management tools.
- Hands-on experience with system security and network management, including support for video conferencing solutions and Adobe Creative Suite.
Customer Service Orientation & Patience
- Exceptional service delivery for non-technical end-users, including executives, in high-stress scenarios.
- A professional, composed, and empathetic demeanor when addressing urgent or complex technical challenges.
Nonprofit and Onsite Experience
- Past experience in a nonprofit environment, understanding organizational needs and resource constraints.
- Comfortable with an on-call rotation for critical emergencies and occasional weekend work.
Work Schedule & On-Site Expectations
- Hybrid Schedule: Onsite 3 days/week and 1 day telework, pending the completion of a probationary period.
- Compressed Work Week: 35 hours (Monday – Thursday), with Fridays off, including 45 minutes of paid breaks daily.
- On-call: The IT Director must maintain 24/7 availability for critical emergencies (e.g., systems outages).
Qualifications
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related field. Advanced certifications are preferred (e.g., Microsoft Azure certifications).
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years in an IT leadership or supervisory role and 6 years of IT operations experience is required.
- Proficiency with a spectrum of enterprise systems and tools:
- Networking (firewalls/VPNs/routers, SonicWall).
- Security platforms and patch management.
- Virtualization platforms like Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware.
- Systems such as IMIS, Jira Service Management, and LMS platforms.
