The Nonprofit Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the organization, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, grant regulations, and nonprofit financial reporting requirements. This role involves managing financial reporting, budgeting, audits, and internal controls while supporting strategic decision-making to further the organization’s mission.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting:
- Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including IRS 990 filings and other state/local filings.
- Develop and maintain internal financial reporting systems and dashboards to provide leadership with real-time financial insights.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads and leadership.
- Monitor actual financial performance against the budget and provide variance analysis.
- Develop cash flow projections and financial forecasts to ensure sustainability.
Audit & Compliance:
- Manage the annual audit process, serving as the primary point of contact for external auditors.
- Ensure adherence to nonprofit financial policies, grant regulations, and internal controls.
- Implement and maintain strong financial controls to prevent fraud and ensure accurate reporting.
Grants & Fund Accounting:
- Oversee grant financial management, including tracking restricted funds and ensuring compliance with donor restrictions.
- Prepare grant budgets, financial reports, and ensure proper fund allocations.
- Work closely with program staff to provide financial insights related to grants and contracts.
Leadership & Strategy:
- Partner with senior leadership to develop financial strategies that align with organizational goals.
- Provide training and guidance to finance and program staff on budgeting and financial management best practices.
- Continuously evaluate and improve financial systems, policies, and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
- 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and nonprofit financial reporting.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Blackbaud, NetSuite) and Excel.
- Experience managing audits, grants, and restricted funds.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
- Strong ethical standards and a commitment to the mission of the organization.
Salary : $80,000 - $90,000
