Veteran Internship Program

Seasonal Full-time, 16 weeks

Cantigny:

Located in Wheaton, Illinois, Cantigny is the former home of Colonel Robert McCormick, longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. Cantigny Gardens:

Created by renowned landscape architect Franz Lipp, the twenty-nine acres of formal gardens at Cantigny are a horticultural masterpiece. Cantigny possesses one of the largest display gardens in the Midwest with more than 160,000 annuals, perennials, ground covers, and flowering shrubs and trees. Cantigny’s gardens are a source of education, recreation, and inspiration to thousands of visitors annually.

Principal Function:

Work under supervision in an assigned Department while participating in the Veteran Internship Program to create a plan for transitioning to the civilian workforce. Furthermore, convene weekly as a veteran cohort to explore garden spaces, acquire new skills via hands-on projects, and participate in small-group sessions aimed at enhancing workplace adaptability and resourcefulness. We are looking forward to welcoming participants to join the program for the 2024 season, anticipated to start mid-May through the beginning of August.

Providing Opportunities:

The Veterans Internship Program provides transitioning service members with professional training and hands-on experience in the civilian workforce. The professional development offered throughout the program prepares veterans for a smooth transition into meaningful civilian careers.

  • Veterans will be provided proper training, mentorship, and leadership during the internship.
  • Veterans will have coaching for resume writing, and interview skills and learn how to search for employment.

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Veteran status
  • Must be able to provide DD Form 214 with the application during the application process
  • Ability to provide Veteran I.D.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills; must be proficient in English
  • Previous computer experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Must be able to walk for extended periods of time and be able to lift at least 70 lbs. to just above the waist (dependent on department role)
  • Must find satisfaction in working with the public and possess an outgoing, friendly, courteous, and enthusiastic personality
  • Must be a team player with a willingness to learn

Working Conditions:

This is a Full-Time position, from April 14 to August 1. May require the use of office equipment including computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, and fax machines. The work can be physically demanding and sometimes includes heavy lifting, repetitive motion, and long periods of standing/walking. Proper safety training and gear must always be used due to the nature and environment of the work. This includes wearing proper PPE and completing safety trainings on a pre-determined schedule.

Pay Rate: $20 per hour

Dates of Position(s): Must be able to work 16 weeks from April 14th to August 1st.
