Maintenance, Utility and Wash

Status: Non-Exempt

1. Job Purpose/Objective:

Starting at $21.29/ Hr

This position is responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of all company and County of Hawaii transportation vehicles. The maintenance and utility wash position ensures that all company transportation vehicles are properly cleaned / washed using the correct procedures and products. The incumbent is also responsible to deliver a high level of personalized service to all clients, passengers, vendors, etc. at the County base yard.

2. Essential Job Functions:

  • Cleaning of vehicles:
  • Interior:
    • Ceiling, windows, seats, floors, walkways, handrails, driver’s area, steps
  • Exterior:
    • Windows, mirrors, tires, hubs, side panels, storage compartments
  • Participate in all training sessions
  • Know safety features of each vehicle and ensure that they are in working order
  • Generates and maintains written task logs

3. Essential Skills (Minimum qualifications individual must possess when entering position) – i.e. skill sets, education, certifications, etc.

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • Type 3 Drivers License with a current valid Hawaii Driver History Record or Hawaii State ID
  • Simple math skills addition, subtraction, multiplication
  • Must be able to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos
  • Able to write simple correspondence
  • Must be able to work flexible days / hours – weekends, nights, holidays
  • Operational knowledge of basic hand tools required
  • Operational knowledge of basic shop equipment (ie: vacuum, hand blower, etc.)
  • Adaptability/Flexibility- Adapts to change, is open to new ideas, takes on new responsibilities, handles pressure, and adjusts plans to meet changing needs.
  • Communication- Communicates well both verbally and in writing, creates accurate and punctual reports, delivers presentations, shares information and ideas with others, has good listening skills.
  • Customer Service- Handles customer questions and complaints, communicates with customers, handles service problems politely and efficiently, always available for customers, follows procedure to solve customer problems, understands company products and services, maintains pleasant and professional image.
  • Decision Making/Judgment- Recognizes problems and responds, systematically gathers information, sorts through complex issues, seeks input from others, addresses root cause of issues, makes timely decisions, can make difficult decisions, uses consensus when possible, communicates decisions to others.
  • Initiative- Tackles problems and takes independent action, seeks out new responsibilities, acts on opportunities, generates new ideas, and practices self-development.
  • Interpersonal Skills- Has good listening skills, builds strong relationships, is flexible/open-minded, negotiates effectively, solicits performance feedback and handles constructive criticism.
  • Job Knowledge- Understands duties and responsibilities, has necessary job knowledge, has necessary technical skills, understands company mission/values, keeps job knowledge current, is in command of critical issues.
  • Work Environment/Safety- Promotes mutual respect, keeps workplace clean and safe, supports safety programs.

4. Mental and Physical Demands:

  • Able to lift push, pull a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and make fine discriminations in sound.
  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performing mechanical or skilled trade’s tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.
  • The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
  • The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
  • The worker is subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
  • Able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other Team Members within the organization
  • Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two step instructions
  • Work environment includes moderate noise levels (groups, machinery)
  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend, possess manual dexterity
  • Must be able to cope with detailed work possessing good vision, depth perception, peripheral vision
  • Able to work in moderate noise levels and fumes from machinery
