SUMMARY:
The Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library (AUC RWWL) supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world's largest consortium of HBCUs—Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the Woodruff Library is the center of intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Security Officer will patrol Robert W. Woodruff Library buildings, parking lots, and grounds to ensure security and prevent damage to or loss of company and employee property. S/he will also assist in securing the safety of the library’s property, patrons, visitors, and staff.
THE IMPACT YOU WILL HAVE:
- Makes routine rounds of the buildings and grounds by vehicle or walking. Watches and reports to shift supervisor irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and unlocked doors.
- Responds to building alarm notices.
- Report to the supervisor any unusual or suspicious condition detected. Completes preliminary investigation of complaints, disturbances, and thefts.
- Provides (written and oral) concise and factual reports of any investigative findings.
- Check incoming and outgoing packages as directed.
- Monitors all entrances during the arrival and departure of employees at main shift changes.
- Open or locks doors, windows, and gates at proper times based on the building operating schedule and specific procedural requirements.
- Reports to the supervisor any incidents of visitor, driver, or employee actions that could result in injury or loss to the Library or employees.
- Acts as facility receptionist as required, including answering telephone calls and greeting visitors.
- Provides the first layer of Library customer service including, but not limited to, handling patron service requests and providing building directional layout.
- Operates and observes Library CCTV camera system view components as directed.
- Operates a two-way radio communication system following appropriate radio protocol.
- Other duties and project work assigned including, but not limited to, committee representation and offsite ambassador duties.
- Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE:
Education:
High School Diploma/GED or vocational school diploma
Work Experience:
A minimum of two years of related experience in security, military, and law enforcement is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to read and write to review and complete required incident reports.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills to verbally interact with library patrons, employees, and visitors effectively.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background and drug test.
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; running may be required to address and report emergency incidents.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Flexibility to work evenings, overnight, and weekends as required.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to walk, run, reach, climb stairs, bend, and work outdoors in inclement weather.

Day shift hours are Sunday-11:30 AM-8:00 PM, Monday-Wednesday 7:30 AM-4:00 PM, Off Thursday and Friday, and Saturday 11:30 AM-6:30 PM.
There is one evening shift. The hours are Sunday- 11:30 AM-8:00 PM, Monday- Wednesday — 4:00 PM-12:30 AM, off Thursday and Friday, and Saturday- 11:30 AM-6:30 PM.
The other evening shift position will be Sunday-Tuesday 4:00 PM-12:30 AM, off Wednesday and Thursday, Friday 11:30 AM-8:00 PM, and Saturday 11:30 AM-6:30 PM.
8 hours per day
During the school year, there are times when the security staff will work 12-hour shifts.
