Managing Editor (ME)
The role of Managing Editor is integral to the operation of the company and the publication of both print and digital magazines and platforms. This person will report directly to the Publishers and Managing Publisher and will be responsible for managing the duties and responsibilities of others although, no direct reports applicable.
Duties of Managing Editor shall include but not be limited to the following:
- Manage content and communication with contributing writers: This role will communicate with ongoing and monthly writers who provide content for the magazine. The ME will communicate deadlines, themes and all other pertinent info monthly and ongoing with writers to insure timely submission. ME will receive and assimilate all content – providing feedback on missing elements etc. Will procure and schedule photography as needed for spreads associated with contributors’ submissions. Will provide copy and photos – edited and ready for designers. Will edit designed work after spread is designed. Will communicate and work with and at times, direct the work of, the Creative Services Manager.
- Manage event and special assignment photographers: Provide monthly schedule of event coverage to freelance photographers/staff members and assign accordingly. Will provide info on events and make contact with events for coverage to ensure continuity. Will receive all photos and content back and assimilate appropriately for design. Will edit spreads after design. Will determine and assign all special assignment photographers for content within magazine and online as needed.
- Will be responsible for brainstorming and writing additional monthly content as needed and assigned by Publisher. Will write, edit and assimilate content and photos to Creative Services Manager.
- Will manage and update production software program - Trello.
- Will help with event design/resize when needed.
- Will provide production support for Publishers and Creative Services Manager – related to but not limited to; editing all pages and content for print products, helping with layout and design in tandem with other appropriate staff to ensure magazine is laid out, edited and ready for pre-press.
- Will attain and provide photographic coverage of events as needed.
- Will attend and act as company representative at ongoing community events as appropriate.
- Will participate in all activities of the magazine and company.
- Will provide oversight and appropriate implementation of digital aspects of Community Calendar, Issuu, SmugMug photos and the creating and sending out of e-blasts.
- Will deliver magazines
The ideal candidate for this job is:
- A Copy-Editor – well versed in AP Style and typical grammar and syntax for publication. Will keep up with and edit for inner company style and ensure continuity of style and branding in all written materials.
- A Graphic Designer - comfortable with and experience in Creative Cloud suite of software including InDesign.
- A Photographer - doesn’t have to be a professional but comfortable with a camera and photo editing.
- Someone who is Marketing and Sales savvy – knows how to contribute to the brand of the product; is a great communicator both written and verbal; able to socialize and network readily; comfortable in social and business settings as representative of the company and the publications; is able to speak to groups and one on one to convey the mission and promotions of the company whenever applicable.
- Must be extremely organized, self-sufficient and motivated, able to work un-supervised and be detail oriented to a fault. This person is the eyes and ears of the magazine and must be able to juggle multiple and different type tasks at all times.
- Must be a team player, professional, goal oriented and enthusiastic about the products, the brand, the community and function as a representative of the magazines and brand within the community.
