Job Description
This position is the backbone of the Science Learning Center, as the lab assistant has knowledge of and assists students in all stages of the learning proves, helps maintain the science area, and creates tutoring sessions designed to bolster students’ confidence and growth in Science. This person also helps the Science Learning Center to grow by developing and delivering workshops and group tutoring sessions that serve students.
Principle Responsibilities and Results
- Tutor students at a variety of ability levels in all Science classes (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics) so that the students can be as successful as possible in their courses.
- Perform basic Learning Center operations to ensure that the Learning Center operates efficiently and provides an environment conducive to student learning. Set daily objectives for student workers in area and monitors their performance.
- Collaborate with Learning Center personnel, Science Department faculty, students and other stakeholders to complete other duties as assigned and ensure the smooth functioning of the department and optimal student success in the classroom. Serve on committee and workgroups as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate or higher degree in Biology/Biological Science AND 1 academic year of teaching/tutoring experience in a Biological Science discipline at the high school level or above.
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology/Biological Science.
- Strong background and knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics.
- Ability to present teaching material to students in the Learning Center and assist student in understanding the concepts in an independent manner.
- Communication skills sufficient to effectively explain concepts and procedures to students so that they are easily understood.
- Ability to present material in both one-on-one and group settings.
- Ability to develop and present workshop for students and/or faculty on topics of need.
- Ability to evaluate student learning and suggest revisions to lab procedures to facilitate learning.
- Ability to review learning center processes and recommend revisions.
Work Shift (Hours / Days of work)
Mon-Weds 9:00am-6:00pm, Thurs 12:00pm-5:00pm, Fri 9:00am-2:00pm
- Position will have reduced hours during summer and other breaks.
