GENERAL SUMMARY
The Archivist I position arranges, describes, and catalogs materials to current Rochester archival and preservation standards. Interacts with external and internal customers for tours, reference questions, and data inquiries and supports small projects as assigned. Works well independently using analytical and problem-solving skills daily.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Follows detailed instructions and procedures for all processes.
- Documents a high volume of materials in both digital and physical forms with extremely low error rates, following all established protocols to ensure using the knowledge and skill of closed vocabulary, researching connections and nuances to already established collections, and labeling all materials properly
- Tracks projects related to goals to meet the deadlines set by management
- Independently applies archival knowledge and skills to cataloging material such as: closed vocabularies, researching connections to already established collections, and labeling materials properly.
- Applies basic software applications used to read/troubleshoot media translation (Windows workstations and operating systems).
- Responsible for providing scans of materials, as needed, using appropriate digital and metadata standards.
- Collaborates with staff and management on projects
- Applies Lean/Six Sigma/ 6s techniques to highlight production issues and enhance productivity
- Provides reference services (requests and tours) for internal staff and external customers.
- Ensures archives work and storage spaces are clean, organized, and always prepared for customer visits.

PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Bachelor's degree in history, social science, or a technical field. Master’s degree is a plus.
- Minimum 2 years in an information science setting or equivalent experience gained through an internship or by volunteering in archives or museums. Prior experience in semiconductor manufacturing or technology is a plus.
- Possesses the ability to understand electrical, mechanical, and material dynamics of working with various storage media formats and preservation techniques for successful restoration.
- Computer skills required, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; able to learn and use the library management system (Soutron). Knowledge of Adobe Acrobat preferred. Knowledge of XML preferred.
- Ability to work independently.
