Job Summary
The Assistant Director for Rochester City Scholars is directly responsible for:
- Assisting in implementing the MCAS student success road map (the Center's success plan for closing achievement gaps)
- Providing support to the overall operation of the Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars (RCS) Program, including establishing and maintaining relationships with key RCS constituents and partners and the Greater Rochester community and the Rochester City School District.
- Assisting with the execution of the MCAS portion of the DDI Summer Experience.
- Assisting in connecting MCAS students with appropriate service-learning opportunities.
Job Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the MCAS Assistant Director for Student Development to develop and Coordinate success planning and management for underrepresented students for graduation.
- Research and develop new support mechanisms for the retention and graduation of underrepresented students.
- Develop and maintain a student development pipeline from students to successful co-ops and careers and/or graduate school.
- Partner with RIT's Office of Cooperative Education and Internships and help guide efforts in assisting underrepresented students.
- Research best strategies and programs that will assist MCAS students in career and graduate school preparation.
- Provide programs and partnerships for co-op and career development opportunities.
- Provide leadership growth and opportunities for MCAS students in experiential learning opportunities (Study Abroad, MOCHA, WOCHA, Co-Ops, etc.)
- Coach students looking for leadership development opportunities and maintain knowledge of opportunities within RIT.
- Maintain current knowledge of regulations, policies, and eligibility requirements for specific student activities and related programs and services.
- Coordinate and execute a mentor/mentee program that unites MCAS/DDI-Affiliated students and allow students to receive mentorship around the areas of academics, leadership, campus navigation/resources, etc.
- Serve as one of the advising coaches for Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars and monitor academic progress.
- Assist with outreach and meeting regularly with select Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars to discuss needs, monitor academic progress, and assist with the resolution of academic and personal challenges.
- Assist in tracking the success of select Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars and generate quarterly reports focused on implementing retention initiatives.
- Support strategic plan for retention and graduation of Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars.
- Assist in finding opportunities for Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholars to be involved in Rochester.
- Responsible for coordinating and executing the RCS Graduation and Welcome event annually.
- Collaborate with MCAS staff in the development and implementation of programming associated with advising, mentoring, and Summer Experiences services.
- Research and assist with developing new support mechanisms for the Summer Experience Program
- Deliver and continually develop a structured academic support program during the academic year.
- Responsible for referring and advocating for Summer Experience and first year students to appropriate RIT and Rochester resources.
- Develop and maintain partnership with Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement to further opportunities for service learning.
- Develop opportunities for MCAS students to participate in community service opportunities (Into the Roc, Alternative Spring Break, General Community Service, etc...)
Required Qualifications:
Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree required in multicultural education, higher education administration, intercultural communication, student affairs administration or related field.
- 1-3 years of relevant professional experience in designing, coordinating, and evaluating educational, social, or cultural activities and/or leadership programs.
- 1-3 years of relevant professional experience working in an environment with competing priorities that require the coordination and management of students, resources, and timelines
- Ability to assess student needs, value a high degree of student contact, and interact interpersonally and effectively with diverse individuals.
- Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective member of a team, and a demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of campus and community constituencies.
