Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director of Disability Services provides visionary and strategic leadership to ensure equitable access and support for students with disabilities. This role is critical in fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment that upholds compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other applicable federal and state laws.

The Director partners with faculty, staff, and administration to develop and implement accessible and pedagogically sound learning environments. The role promotes student success, self-advocacy, and independence while ensuring that university programs, services, and facilities remain inclusive and compliant. Additionally, the Director will assess and recommend potential expansions to disability services that align with institutional priorities and student needs.

Job Responsibilities:

Strategic Accessibility Leadership

  • Oversee and assess accommodation processes to support a range of disabilities, ensuring timely and effective implementation.
  • Serve as the primary advisor on accessibility and disability services, working collaboratively with campus stakeholders to promote an inclusive and legally compliant learning environment.
  • Align practices with compliance mandates and advise on regulatory changes and best practices.
  • Work closely with faculty to develop educational approaches that integrate accessibility principles while maintaining academic rigor.
  • Lead exploratory efforts to identify potential service enhancements, working collaboratively with campus partners while maintaining a student-centered approach.
  • Ensure all practices and services align with institutional mission and compliance mandates, advising on regulatory changes and best practices in accessibility
  • Lead the DSO Faculty Advisory Committee collaboration efforts with the university academic leadership.

Administration and Operational Management

  • Lead a collaborative Accessibility and Disability Services Office team focused on continuous improvement and student-centered service.
  • Manage the supervise staff, departmental budget, policies, and confidential student data, develop initiatives, ensuring best-practice compliance.
  • Provide oversight for a comprehensive assessment plan, using data to refine services and demonstrate departmental impact.
  • Engage in university strategic planning initiatives, serving on committees to further institutional goals in accessibility, student success, and well-being.
  • Collaborate with university partners to ensure equitable access.

Disability Services Expertise and Compliance

  • Act as a resource on ADA, Section 504, and related regulations, providing training for faculty and staff.
  • Consult with medical providers, students, and faculty to assess and implement legally supported accommodations that uphold institutional and academic integrity.
  • Design and deliver workshops for faculty and staff to enhance awareness of accessibility policies and best practices.
  • Work closely with faculty to develop educational approaches that integrate accessibility principles while maintaining academic rigor.
  • Lead exploratory efforts to identify potential service enhancements, working collaboratively with campus partners while maintaining a student-centered approach.
  • Ensure all practices and services align with institutional mission and compliance mandates, advising on regulatory changes and best practices in accessibility
  • Lead the DSO Faculty Advisory Committee collaboration efforts with the university academic leadership.

Professional Development & Campus Engagement

  • Engage in evidence-based advocacy that aligns with university policies and legal frameworks, supporting student success while fostering a culture of shared responsibility for accessibility.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development in disability and accessibility services.
  • Contribute to Student Affairs and university initiatives that promote an inclusive and student-centered environment.

Administration and Operational Management

Education/Experience:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, special education, or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in higher education disability services.
  • Expertise in ADA, Section 504, and New York State disability laws.

Skills:

  • Ability to critically evaluate accommodation requests and lead a team effectively.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with proficiency in data-driven decision-making.
  • Excellent communication skills for engaging diverse audiences, particularly faculty and academic leaders.
  • Proficiency with technology relevant to disability services, including familiarity with assistive technology and alternate print formats.
  • High level of discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and American Sign Language (ASL) or a willingness to learn.

Skills:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years management experience.
  • Fluent in ASL.
  • Certification in Disability Services.
  • Experience with strategic planning and program assessment.
