Job Summary
The Engineer II - Energy Systems position is responsible for the analysis of building, transportation, industrial, and public energy systems at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) at Rochester Institute of Technology.
The position will work with government and community stakeholders (industry, building owners, general public) to understand energy usage, and local, regional and global impacts as well as opportunities for impact reduction through efficiency improvement and clean energy technology adoption. A key element of the position is the assessment of energy equity factors in local communities as part of a Community Benefits Plan, including environmental and economic impacts associated with new technology deployment,
The position will participate in or lead: research into best practices and state of the art solutions, data collection, development of system models and analysis methodologies, data analysis, and communication of results. General position expectations include responsibility for: providing technical assistance, conducting applied research, and developing and delivering training, as well as project scoping, proposal development, technical report writing, sponsor and client relations, and project management. The position reports to the Manager of the GIS Mechanical Engineering Team.

Each year, about 100 companies, governments, and other organizations engage GIS's research centers on a variety of projects to solve technical problems, innovate products or processes, research manufacturing technologies, reduce their environmental footprint, or commercialize a new technology. Research center projects are led by full-time professional staff with significant industry experience.

Job Responsibilities
Conduct Applied Research
- Participate as a technical resource on various applied research projects
- Conduct secondary research and document findings
- Interface with technology and service providers to understand cost and performance/value of offerings
- Collect primary and secondary data on energy systems, including collection of technical data, as well as stakeholder input via surveys or interviews
- Develop system models and analysis methodologies, including environmental impacts and techno-economic analyses
- Analyze data
- Develop/design recommendations for improvement, and project conclusions
- Support proposal development activities: build and manage relationships with clients/sponsors to understand needs and goals, and scope projects providing associated budget and schedule inputs.
- Manage own tasks to schedule and budget
- Contribute to, and write project reports and documentation to disseminate findings
- Develop PowerPoint presentations and present to stakeholders
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- 2 years of work experience, including analysis, design, or implementation of energy systems (thermal, electrical, electro-chemical, etc)
- Strong fundamental understanding of energy systems, with some experience in utility, industrial, or building energy analysis
- Demonstrated skills with data analysis and modeling tools such as Matlab or Python, PowerBi, and Excel
- Experience in formal report writing
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Project management experience for schedule and budget tracking
- Self-motivated, with strong organizational skills
- MS or PhD in sustainability, or mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering
- Experience in design or analysis of energy systems for industry or transportation systems, including environmental impacts
- Experience with fuel cell or electrolyzer systems
- Experience with Life Cycle Analysis or Techno-Economic Analysis
- Prior technical publication experience
