Detailed Job Description
Reporting to the Director, RIT Tait Preserve, the Gardens and Grounds Specialist is responsible for planning and performing duties related to the enhancement of the grounds and gardens at the 177-acre Tait Preserve by maintaining existing plantings and designing and installing new landscape features throughout the property; including work in forests, fields and with the 60-acre lake, shorelines, and boat docks.
The Gardens and Grounds Specialist also assists with agricultural production, and is largely responsible for the management and operation of the new 500 tree apple orchard. They will develop strong working relationships with key RIT staff to create a system for orders and deliveries of agricultural products from the Tait Preserve in Penfield to the Henrietta campus.
Also, the Gardens and Grounds Specialist will assist with logistics and provide support for faculty/academic research projects taking place on the property or lake, while also assisting with event logistics taking place in the 5,000 square foot Leenhouts Lodge. They will have direct supervision over 3-5 student staff members, and will also be responsible for leading tours of the property for members of the RIT community.

The University Arenas department encompasses the management and operation of the premier event venues at RIT, including the Gene Polisseni Center, Gordon Field House & Activities Center, Frank Ritter Ice Arena, Lobozzo Alumni House, University Gallery, and the Tait Preserve and Leenhouts Lodge. Additional business functions consist of sales, marketing, promotions, campus wide ticketing, and event planning/management; as well as agricultural operations and property management at the 177-acre Tait Preserve. The 400,000 square-feet of venues host 400 events annually with over 300,000 in event attendance.
Required Minimum Qualifications
3-5 Years of relevant experience in horticulture, agriculture, or ecology fields
Professional communication skills along with attention to detail.
Ability to supervise student staff and distribute scheduled work
