Reporting to the Associate Clinical Director of the Student Health Center (SHC), the ASL Interpreter provides interpreting services for deaf or hard of hearing patients and the health care providers they are seeing in a college health setting. Services offered in the health center include psychiatry, minor trauma evaluation/management and primary care services including sexual and gender health care. This is a half-time position working an opposite schedule of another ASL interpreter.

Major Responsibilities:
- Provide interpreting and/or communication support for Student Health Center staff, and deaf/hard of hearing consumers.
- Interpreting for direct one-one and/or group interactions
- Promote understanding and enhance knowledge of staff role/function of the interpreter; use of specialized equipment, etc.
- Serving as an advocate for deaf/hard of hearing patients.
- Health education and health promotion
- initiate special projects related to communication with Deaf/Hard of Hearing/Deaf Blind patients
- identify appropriate ASL health video resources to be shared with patients
- Participate in special programs or events reaching our deaf/Hard of Hearing/ Deaf Blind populations.
- Participate in SHC(Student Health Center) committees and initiatives that support our AAAHC accreditation.
- Other Duties as assigned including but not limited to
- Support interpreting students in developing practical experiences in health care settings
- RIT Required Trainings
- Associates degree or equivalent experience
- An Associate's degree or equivalent credit hours in pursuit of Bachelor's degree
- and 4 years' experience;
- Or Bachelor's degree and 3 years of interpreting experience
- Or Master's degree and 2 years of interpreting experience
- 2 years of professional experience interpreting in a healthcare setting
- 2 or more years of experience working in healthcare as a sign language interpreter preferred.
- Or 2 years of professional experience interpreting in a healthcare setting
- Experience in a primary care setting preferred.
- Certification, professional license, or credential
- Certification by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), NIC Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting strongly preferred
- Must be friendly and have a professional demeanor
- High level of professionalism including timeliness and flexibility
- Strong customer service skills
- Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences
- Ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships based on respect, empathy and honesty with diverse groups and individuals
- Proficiency in American Sign Language and English
- Knowledge of Deaf culture
- Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information; uses confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, protects information appropriately
- High level of comfort with interpreting difficulty conversations including mental health crises, sexual history and gender identity.
- Follow the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct and utilize additional resources/support as appropriate.
- Competence using word processing, email, and electronic calendaring software, computer competence supporting position functions
- Experience working with Deaf Interpreters
- Delivery of educational content to peers
- Bachelor's/Master's degree
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience in Outlook Calendaring
- Experience with Pyramed or other electronic medical record
- Certification by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), NIC Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting strongly preferred
