Detailed Job Description

The Deaf Health Care and Biomedical Science Hub (Deaf Hub) invites candidates to apply for a non-tenure-track Assistant / Associate Research Professor position. Academic rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.This is a one-year appointment, renewal beyond one year will be dependent upon obtaining external funding. The Assistant / Associate Research Professor will report to the Executive Director of the Deaf Hub. The Assistant / Associate Research Professor will be responsible for leading externally funded research and assisting with the Deaf Hub's mentorship programs. Areas of potential research focus include, but are not limited to, public health, preventive health, health literacy, health policy, healthcare systemic barriers, access technology, sign language interpretation and related issues affecting the deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) population in health care and biomedical settings. While we encourage in-person work in the Deaf Hub for maximum student interaction, we will entertain requests for a flexible hybrid work schedule.

The faculty of the Deaf Hub are engaged teachers and researchers, preparing students for health training programs, graduate programs, and research careers in health care and biomedical sciences. The new Assistant / Associate Professor will :

  • Develop external funding proposals related to DHH individuals' health (as PI or co-PI), and implement funded projects.
  • Secure funding to support research and development programs sufficient in magnitude to cover a majority of the salary and benefits expenses of the post, making such progress as stipulated in an annual Plan of Work
  • Produce and submit Deaf Health-related manuscripts to peer-reviewed publications on a regular basis
  • Provide mentoring to DHH students pursuing biomedical science and healthcare careers at RIT
  • Travel locally and nationally as needed for research collaborations, dissemination of research findings and to fulfill listed key activities.
  • Attend professional development activities
  • Serve in the Deaf Hub, NTID DSM, institute, and community as needed
  • Participate in additional duties and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Executive Director of the Deaf Hub

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • An earned terminal degree (PhD, EdD, MD, PharmD, or similar qualification) in an area of Medicine, Biomedical Sciences that pertain to the human body
  • Demonstrated success or potential in the area of scholarship with a focus on public health, health disparities, or biomedical sciences
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college's continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
  • Ability to sign proficiently, coupled with an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

    Deaf Hub : The Deaf Health Care and Biomedical Science Hub (Deaf Hub) aims to improve the healthcare training experience through mentoring students and professionals, to increase universal access in the health system by working with the community of health professionals, and to strive for better health of deaf and hard-of-hearing people informed by research. The Deaf Hub works towards the long-term goal of increasing the number of deaf and hard-of-hearing people entering health care and biomedical science careers.

    The Deaf Hub achieves its goals in six categories by :

  • Mentoring deaf and hard-of-hearing students interested in a career in health care or biomedical science.
  • Supporting the continued success of existing biomedical and healthcare conferences for deaf and hard-of-hearing trainees and professionals.
  • Providing professional development and training opportunities for healthcare professionals.
  • Improving the health care and biomedical knowledge and sign language skills of American Sign Language interpreters.
  • Developing health systems employers' awareness of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals as qualified for a career in health care and biomedical science, including how they can be hired and successfully integrated into the healthcare workforce.
  • Supporting the dissemination of accessible content to help healthcare professionals work efficiently with their deaf and hard-of-hearing patients.
