Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Assistant Director for Residence Life, the Residence Coordinator will provide leadership for a residential area of 300-500 students during the academic year. The Residence Coordinator provides student staff supervision, student support, and crisis response in service to the undergraduate and graduate residential students at the University. The Residence Coordinator Position is a 12-month live-on position.

Staff Supervision and Development

  • Supervise staff of 8-16 Resident Advisors
  • Provide comprehensive training & ongoing development for RA staff as part of a Center-wide training program
  • Facilitate staff meetings and one-on-one meetings with the student staff
  • Conduct formal performance evaluations of student staff to identify strengths and areas of improvement
  • Coordinate individual goal setting and action plans with staff

Student Support and Outreach

  • Manage and coordinate ongoing relationships with students in need of resources to support holistic student wellness
  • Provide basic counseling in personal safety, conflict resolution, roommate conflicts, academic success, etc.
  • Provide outreach and follow up on mental health issues with referrals to appropriate campus resources
  • Work closely with the Student Behavior Consultation Team, Public Safety, and other campus partners to identify students in need of support and outreach
  • Participate in an on-call duty rotation
  • Student Engagement

  • Support programming efforts utilizing RIT Wellness initiatives and the Center for Residence Life residential curriculum to meet the diverse needs of the residence hall population
  • Initiate ongoing interactions with students as well as connect students with campus and community resources that enhance their academic and co-curricular experience
  • Advise a student organization, Special Interest House, living / learning community, or residentially-based Greek communities
  • Contribute in a meaningful way to the University's continuing commitment to pluralism
  • Maintain a presence and visibility on campus, including participation in events and dining in campus facilities
  • A partial meal plan is provided to support this requirement (taxable income)
  • Student Conduct

  • Assist RA staff and Public Safety with incident response and documentation
  • Hold informal conduct hearings and engage in restorative conversations
  • Promote restorative values in response to conflict situations
  • Represent the Center for Residence Life in formal conduct hearings in the absence of the Assistant Director
  • Administrative Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with RIT Housing to ensure the smooth operation of residence halls, including the opening and closing of residence halls, health and safety inspections, and resident room changes
  • Participate in Center, Division, and University committees
  • Maintain a flexible schedule of availability, including after hours and weekends, to meet the needs of students
  • Dialogue and collaborate with various campus partners such as but not limited to (Public Safety, Center for Campus Life, Student Life Team, Academic Advisors, Center for Women and Gender, Center for Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution)
  • Provide oversight for student staff and student organization spending
  • Regularly communicate and advocate for residents' issues and needs to Facilities Management, Public Safety, and RIT Housing

    Required Qualifications

    Education :

    Master's degree required in Student Personnel, Counseling or a closely related field

    Experience :

  • 1-2 years of experience in a higher education setting with experience in :
  • Working with a diverse population (students, faculty, staff, parents, outside
  • community partners.
  • Effective verbal, presentation, written, and digital intercultural communication skills.
  • Advising / coaching skills.
  • Crisis management / conflict resolution.
  • Managing a budget.
  • Skills :

  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, leadership, organizational, and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of mental health and student well-being concerns
  • Must be willing to learn American Sign Language and about Deaf culture
