Job Summary
The Senior Engineer-Pollution Prevention position will primarily support industrial/manufacturing client programs of the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at RIT. The Senior Engineer - Pollution Prevention will use their technical expertise and industry experience to facilitate the reduction of environmental impacts at the source.
The Sr. Engr - P2. will evaluate P2 opportunities at manufacturers, manage client and partner relationships, and develop and execute project proposals in a variety of different industry sectors. Working in a team based environment, as both a project lead, and a project contributor for different projects, this role is responsible for: researching, identifying, and developing solutions or evaluating existing technologies to address P2 opportunities, managing projects to an on-time and on-budget completion, mentoring junior staff, and documenting project outcomes (via detailed final client reports, case studies, project presentations, workshops, etc). The position reports to the NYS P2I Associate Director.
Job Responsibilities:
Screen companies for P2 opportunities, develop project proposals, and manage client relations:
- Collect and evaluate Federal, State and Local data on existing and growing economic levels, national environmental emphasis areas, and NY State environmental focus areas to inform decisions on project areas.
- Use screening methods and input from P2I management to choose the most impactful and relevant areas to pursue.
- Ensure alignment with Institute initiatives, current expertise and available staff resources.
- Establish and maintain regular communication with clients
- Establish and maintain regular communication with statewide Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) and other organizations
Technical Assistance/Applied Research:
- Provide hands-on direct assistance to industry in a variety of sectors, including assessing manufacturing processes to identify areas of improvement, collecting data on-site and performing material and energy balances to identify baseline metrics, researching and identifying environmentally preferable and cost-effective alternatives, and assisting companies in meeting certifications/scorecards or other sustainability goals.
- Identify and collect baseline data on resource use and waste generation
- Conduct secondary research on new technologies and approaches to identify P2 solutions for clients.
- Conduct experiments to assess the validity, efficacy, and feasibility of potential solutions for client-specific applications.
- Conduct applied research for special projects to advance pollution prevention in NYS
- Provide technical leadership, and mentor junior staff
- While leading some projects, also participate as a technical resource on projects led by other staff
- Contribute to grant proposal development and content
Project Management:
- Plan projects primarily for manufacturing client P2 assessment, feasibility, and implementation.
- Develop scopes of work along with a project budget estimate, timeline, a resource plan, and a risk assessment/mitigation plan.
- Execute projects, including sourcing/scheduling of necessary resources, including consultants, collaborating entities, materials, supplies, testing and equipment.
- Lead and motivate multidisciplinary project teams, and manage client relationships.
- Monitor and control the projects so that they are completed on time, within budget, and meet stated goals.
- Use project management tools, as appropriate, and identify new tools and approaches for continuous improvement.
Project Reporting and Communication:
- Lead the writing of final project reports, including taking responsibility for the technical content of the work.
- Identify, collect and report on environmental metrics
- Write project reports and documentation to disseminate findings
- Develop content and deliver presentations and workshops and professional training
- Write content for case studies, success stories and articles
- Prepare and present monthly project progress reports.
Required Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
8 years of work experience with BS degree, 7 years of work experience with advanced degree. Work experience should include: analysis, design, or implementation of manufacturing process improvements, source reduction (etc).
Skills:
- Strong fundamental understanding of manufacturing principles, process optimization, implementation of improvement projects, and cost justification methods.
- Ability to solve complex problems
- Demonstrated skills with data analysis and statistical evaluation tools
- Experience in formal report writing
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Project management experience for schedule and budget tracking
- Self-motivated, with strong organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree strongly preferred
- Lean training
- Understanding of manufacturing cost/benefit, and capital investment practices
- Experience in design or analysis of source reduction projects, such as energy efficiency, chemical and water use reduction, etc.
- Environmental Impact and/or P2 Assessments
- Awareness of Green Chemistry, material substitution strategies, Design for the Environment
- Understanding of material and energy balance calculations
- Experience with Life Cycle Assessment or Techno-Economic Analysis

The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) is a statewide technology development, transfer, and assistance center whose mission is to make New York state more environmentally sustainable for businesses, workers, and the public through more efficient use of raw materials, energy and water, and reductions in toxic chemical use, emissions to the environment and waste generation. NYSP2I is an integrated program of several major elements: direct technical assistance to industry and organizations; research, development, and diffusion; outreach; professional training; a community grants program; and academic educational program development. NYSP2I also focuses on the acceleration of green technologies and greening of the supply chain. NYSP2I is led by Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and is a partnership between RIT, Clarkson University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Cornell University, Binghamton University and the New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP).
