Detailed Job Description

The School of Art within the College of Art and Design at RIT welcomes applications for a tenure-track position in Medical Illustration. The appointment begins fall 2025. The ideal candidate will teach all levels of undergraduate and graduate Medical Illustration curricula and should demonstrate outstanding skills, including strong draftsmanship, the ability to visualize and communicate medical and allied health concepts, the ability to produce animated content, and contribute to the program through critiques, portfolio reviews, and curricular design.

Undergraduate students go through a rigorous foundation year, introduction to major areas in their sophomore year, and then into the major courses in their junior and senior years, leading to a Bachelor Fine Arts (BFA) degree. In addition, BFA candidates attend Human Biology I & II freshman year, Anatomy and Physiology I & II sophomore year, and Human Gross Anatomy junior year. These courses provide the scientific foundation for the biomedical lessons students create throughout their third and fourth years. Learn more about the program- RIT BFA Medical Illustration

The two-year graduate program leads to a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree and is accredited by the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) in conjunction with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Students enter the program having completed a set of required bioscience courses. At RIT, the MFA candidates complete additional bioscience courses including Human Gross Anatomy, Human Immunology, Medical Pathophysiology, and Histology & Histopathology.

The successful candidate would be expected to :

  • Teach courses in Medical Illustration to undergraduate, advanced undergraduate, and graduate students (with a typical 2 / 3 teaching load prior to tenure and a 3 / 3 load following tenure)
  • Develop courses and advance curriculum related to the candidate's area(s) of specialty and contemporary technological advances and directions of the field
  • Pursue a scholarly research agenda resulting in peer-reviewed projects and publications
  • Eengage in service activities in support of the School of Art, College of Art and Design, and RIT
  • Participate actively in the life of the university and the surrounding community.

    Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Medical Illustration, or a related field, in hand before August 1, 2025.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching at the university level.
  • Professional practice in the field demonstrated through national exhibitions, peer-reviewed publications, relevant grants, significant projects, awards, etc.
  • Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college's continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
  • Experience in creating 2D and / or 3D visualization of allied health and medicine.

    THE SCHOOL : The School of Art is home to 27 full-time faculty members leading programs in ceramics, expanded forms, furniture design, glass, illustration, medical illustration, metals and jewelry design, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The minor in art history is based in the School of Art. Graduate programs in the School of Art are offered in fine arts studio and art education; the connected School for American Crafts houses graduate programs in glass, furniture design, metals and jewelry design, and ceramics.
