What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estate Gardener: Main House position at Rock Cobble Farm?
Rock Cobble Farm, located in Northwest Connecticut, is a large private estate with extensive formal gardens, greenhouses, and natural areas.
The estate is looking for a Main House Gardener to assist the team in maintaining the manicured gardens surrounding the estate’s main house and satellite gardens. These encompass but are not limited to formal French gardens containing extensive curated collections of roses, herbs, perennial and annual flowers, boxwood and hornbeam hedges, stilted hedges, orchard and espaliered fruit trees, container displays, water features, and arbors.
The Main House Gardener will work alongside the Main House Horticulturist and Rosarian in the daily horticultural operations of the main house gardens. Ensuring that the gardens and displays are maintained in keeping with our horticultural standards. The Main House Gardener will work with the entire horticultural team to support the operations of the farm.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Main House Horticulturist and Rosarian in all projects across all gardens on the farm.
- Perform garden maintenance such as bed preparation, planting, watering, fertilizing, mulching, pruning, regular weeding, leaf blowing, and general cleanup.
- Perennial and annual care—amending, deadheading, staking, dividing, moving, and transplanting when necessary.
- Monitor for pests, diseases, and invasive species, and apply treatments as needed.
- Planting, maintaining, and watering container plants.
- Tying and training vines and brambles.
- Ponds and water feature maintenance.
- Ensuring all plants are accurately labeled.
- Moving plants and furniture placement.
- Assisting in the winterization of sensitive plant material.
Requirements
- Adherence to high aesthetic standards in all areas.
- Interact effectively with other staff to ensure clear communication.
- Ability to use horticultural tools and power equipment safely.
- Basic knowledge of horticultural techniques.
- Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Able to perform physically strenuous tasks and be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Motivated to work independently and able to take directions.
Requirements: This position requires a willingness to learn and strong attention to detail. Plant-related degree/diploma or prior experience with fine gardening.
