Position Summary and Job Duties



Rock County Sheriff's Office, per the Deputy Sheriff's contract honors lateral transfer:
Lateral Transfer Pay/Vacation Credit. The Sheriff may determine that a particular appointment be made above the entrance pay rate, up to Step D, in recognition of relevant experience and/or exceptional qualifications. In this scenario, the employee will receive completion credits, as labeled in the wage schedule, towards step progression. For example, if the employee is awarded Step B they have earned 12 months toward movement to Step C. These completion credits only apply to step progression and no other benefits or seniority. Upon completion of the probationary period, the completion credits shall be applied to the employee’s vacation allotment up to Step D.

A deputy sheriff performs the duties of a sworn law enforcement officer as designated by the command staff under the direction of the elected Sheriff.

This is responsible work enforcing laws and ordinances, providing detention and courtroom services, patrol and guard duty and related supportive law enforcement activities in the Sheriff's Office. Work involves prevention, detection and investigation of accident and criminal activities, security and safety of inmates/prisoners, protection for the public and maintaining law and order. Deputies must be able to act without direct supervision in emergency situations.

100% - Perform Law Enforcement activities within Rock County
  • Enforce state laws and county ordinances.
  • Respond to citizen requests for assistance.
  • Arrest criminal code violators.
  • Guard, transport and care for inmates.
  • Monitor vehicle traffic on highways and roads within Rock County.
  • Investigate vehicle crashes.
  • Operate Doppler radar unit in vehicle speed enforcement.
  • Write reports, citations, document and maintain files, including using computers for reporting and retrieval.
  • Serve legal papers on people, business and places.
  • Execute writs, including evictions, repossessions, collection of money and lands.
  • Assist with Foreclosure sales, including posting notices, auctions and post sale papers.
  • Conduct Child Passenger Safety checks and provide training.
  • Transport inmates and juveniles to and from correctional facilities and court.
  • Search prisoners for weapons and contraband.
  • Provide security to courthouse and courtrooms.
  • Acquire, execute, and return warrants and search warrants.
  • Collect and process evidence.
  • Ability to utilize technology in the performance of job duties.
  • Participation on special teams.
  • Answer telephone and letter requests from attorneys, plaintiff's and Clerk of Courts.
  • Testify in court.
  • Operate vehicles and other equipment including firearms during hours of work.
  • Conduct criminal investigations.
  • Intervene in domestic and mental health disturbances.
  • Educate the public on crime prevention techniques.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Perform other work as required

Success Factors (KSA's)

  • Knowledge of modern police practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances, particularly the laws of arrest and evidence.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the County.
  • Knowledge of the standard operating procedures and geneal orders of the Sheriff's Office.
  • Knowledge of first aid principles.
  • Ability to deal firmly and courteously with those under custody and the public.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper courses of action to be taken.
  • Ability to obtain information through interview and interrogation.
  • Ability to meet specific physical requirements that may be established by competent authority.
  • Ability to develop a working relationship with other allied agencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including using computers to generate reports.
  • Ability to remain calm in tense or hostile situations.
  • Ability to pass certification in the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Ability to work without supervision and to make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Ability to restrain an individual and employ all use of force options
  • Skill in the use and care of firearms and baton.
  • Knowledge of state statutes.

Job Requirements, Education, Training & Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • A minimum of 40 college credits at time of hire, assuming you would earn 21 credits at the Law Enforcement Academy.
  • A minimum of 60 college credits if you do not need the Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board certification, preferred.
  • Passing score on written examination.
  • Pass background investigation, psychological exam, and medical exam that includes a cardiovascular fitness test, drug screening, and psychological evaluation.
  • Must not have been convicted of any federal felony or offense punishable in Wisconsin as a felony unless granted absolute and unconditional pardon.
  • Visual acuity correctable to 20/20 with glasses or contacts
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record
  • U.S. citizen
  • Required to maintain certification from Wisconsin State Law Enforcement Standards Board and legally be able to carry a firearm.
  • Attend 24 hours of in-service training annually to maintain law enforcement certification.

  • Ability to lift, push/pull objects weighing up to 165 pounds infrequently.
  • Ability to maintain physical control of aggressive disorderly subjects using trained use of force options.
  • Ability to frequently sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to utilize sense of smell for detecting smoke or odorous chemicals.

Equipment Use:
  • Ability to use computer and computer keyboard.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and other equipment including firearms during hours of work
  • Ability to operate Doppler radar unit in vehicle speed enforcement
Working Conditions:
  • Hazard of physical attack or injury.
  • Inside and outside work with exposure to weather conditions.
  • Exposure to fire, chemical, electrical, mechanical and firearm hazards.
  • Exposure to fast moving vehicles and motor vehicle accidents.
  • Exposure to loud noises (firearms and explosives)
  • Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens and contagious diseases.
