CNC Machine Shop Supervisor

Rock West Composites, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a CNC Machine Shop Supervisor.  

Rock West Composites, Inc. is an engineering and manufacturing company dedicated to providing innovative solutions for commercial and government customers. This position is located in our San Diego, CA 92154 location and reports to the Director of Manufacturing.

Position Summary:

The CNC Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the CNC machining department, ensuring efficient production while maintaining high-quality standards. This role involves leading and managing a team of CNC operators, coordinating production schedules, and optimizing workflow for maximum efficiency. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting machine issues, maintaining equipment and facilities, and implementing process improvements to enhance productivity. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in CNC programming, machining processes, and leadership, with a commitment to safety protocols and continuous operational excellence.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Develop and execute production plans based on program orders, ensuring timely delivery while optimizing machine utilization.
• Lead and supervise a team of CNC operators, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, providing training, maintaining tool/hardware organization and housekeeping standards, and addressing any performance concerns.
• Implement quality checks throughout the production process, identifying and resolving any quality issues to maintain product specifications.
• Monitor machine health, schedule preventative maintenance, and coordinate necessary repairs to minimize downtime.
• Possessing in-depth knowledge of CNC machining principles and the capabilities of different types of CNC machines. Review and interpret engineering drawings, assign CNC programs, tool and fixture planning, and optimize machining schedule for efficient production.
• Selecting and ordering appropriate cutting tools, ensuring proper tool storage and inventory control. Manage storage and inventory of machining fixtures.
• Diagnose and resolve machine malfunctions, including programming errors, tooling issues, and mechanical problems.
• Ensure adherence to all safety regulations within the machine shop, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
• Monitor production costs, identify opportunities for cost reduction, and manage inventory of tooling and materials.
• Identify areas for process improvement, implement new technologies and techniques to enhance productivity and efficiency.
• Collaborate with engineering, quality control, and other departments to ensure smooth production flow and address any issues.

Non-Essential Functions:

Required Education and Experience:

• At least 10 years of experience operating CNC machines, including 3, 4, and 5 axis milling. 
• A minimum of 5 years of experience leading and supervising a team of CNC machinists.
• Proficiency with MasterCAM and G-code.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot machine issues.
• Ability to read, interpret, and understand engineering technical data packages, including CAD models, engineering drawings, quality inspection/control plans, and manufacturing instructions, with a solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Skilled in the use of conventional measuring tools.
• Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Strong leadership and communication skills to motivate and manage a team.
• A deep understanding of precision dimensional measuring systems, quality control procedures, and methodologies.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet production deadlines.
• Knowledge of lean manufacturing and 5S principles.

ITAR Requirement

This position requires the use of information which is subject to compliance with International Traffic Arms Regulations (ITAR). Compensation:

The hourly range for this position falls within $38-$42. The final compensation will be determined based on experience, skillset,  and other factors permitted by law.
