Rock West Composites, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a Composite Test Technician.
Rock West Composites, Inc. is an engineering and manufacturing company dedicated to providing innovative solutions for commercial and government customers. This position is located in our San Diego North office at 7919 Saint Andrews Ave San Diego, CA and reports to the Quality Manager.
Position Summary:
Supports Quality Assurance department in the characterization and documentation of composites, paints, adhesives, and other materials to meet receiving and recertification testing requirements. This role involves developing and implementing testing procedures to conduct mechanical tests on materials in a controlled, compliant, and consistent manner. Additionally, the position focuses on improving manufacturing efficiency and product quality by standardizing processes and implementing robust process controls to align with enterprise objectives.
Essential Functions:
- Prepare and oversee testing of composite coupons and other materials to meet engineering requirements for receipt and recertification tests. Testing to include mechanical properties (Lap Shear, Hardness, Wet/Dry Adhesion, Resistance, Adhesive Bond Line and Paint Thickness, etc..), Flammability, and Chemical/Cure (Viscosity, Flow, Gel) and related analyses.
- Assist in procurement and installation of mechanical test and data acquisition equipment enabling coupon-level tests of composite materials. Accomplish same to test structural components/assemblies to customized load conditions.
- Read and interpret Boeing and other customer engineering and process specifications.
- Oversee and manage site calibration program for all operations, measuring & testing equipment.
- Oversee compliance program for pressure, temperature, particulate and humidity-controlled areas.
- Assist other QA departments (In-Process and Final) as required.
- Conduct mechanical testing of composite & adhesive specimens and paint samples.
- Write clear, concise test reports documenting test data, test methods, etc.
- Able to gather technical inputs from manufacturing & quality engineers and combine into clear, cohesive standards for testing materials including layup, curing, machining, material storage and shipping.
- Identify areas for improvement in materials testing.
- Understands composite and metallic lamination and bonding processes.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications – MSWord, Excel, Powerpoint.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and technical writing.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Ability to work with Quality Assurance to document data to meet customer flow down requirements (i.e., inspection, testing and verification methods (with clearly defined acceptance criteria).
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, or related field is highly preferred
- 5 yrs experience with mechanical, chemical, and environmental testing of composite and adhesive materials (e.g., lap shear, flammability, viscosity, paint thickness).
- Familiarity with Boeing engineering/process specifications is a PLUS
- Hands-on experience in the procurement, installation, and operation of mechanical testing and data acquisition equipment for composite materials and structural components.
- Ability to document testing methods and results clearly and concisely in technical reports.

Compensation:
The compensation range for this position falls within $32 and $38 per hour. The final compensation will be determined based on experience, skillset, and other factors permitted by law.
