Job Summary

 

Employees in this class are responsible for repairing, servicing, and maintaining automotive and construction equipment in accordance with standard trade practices. Additionally, employees in this class possess advanced skill and expertise in Emergency Vehicle maintenance. And will serve as a leader and/or trainer for other automotive techniciansWork is performed in accordance with department and industry safety policies and procedures and supervisory instructions. Work is assigned by the Fleet Services Shop Supervisor and the Fleet Services Operations Manager in terms of general and detailed instructions. Work is spot-checked and reviewed for accuracy and quality of work.

Essential Functions

 

Essential Functions: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.

 

Performs skilled automotive mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and auxiliary equipment with electronic components, including vans with lifts, passenger buses, dump trucks, sweepers, automobilesand pickup trucks.

 

Repairs and overhauls mechanical components on buses, automobiles, specialized and multi-purpose trucks, and other departmental equipment.

Conducts regular preventive maintenance on Emergency Vehicles, such as Fire Engine Apparatus, as well as specialty vehicles.

 

Performs preventative maintenance, repairs, rebuilds, or replaces complete or integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, components, brakes, tire rotations, oil changes, filters, etc.

 

Completes safety and equipment checklist.

 

Diagnoses malfunctions and adjusts engine, fuel, electrical, and mechanical systems to specifications, including electronic fuel injection systems and electronically controlled transmissions.

 

Replaces and/or repairs parts to engines such as installing new fuel injectors, generators, starters, transmissions, differentials, drive lines, rear ends, radiators, air brake systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, oil and air filters, fuel filters, air pumps, water pumps, and fuel pumps.

 

Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of the shop and surrounding area.

 

Tunes engines by installing coils and wires, cleaning and re-gapping spark plugs or putting in new plugs.

 

Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with safety regulations and guidelines; ensure that vehicles meet quality standards and specifications.



Essential Functions (Continued)

Troubleshoots and inspects to determine nature and extent of repair; performs quality control inspections to ensure that all repairs meet manufacturer specifications; responds to emergency road calls for disabled county vehicles and equipment, if necessary

Performs repairs on various diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment, as well as fire pumps, small engines, and related components.

 

Coordinates with the Fleet Services Advisor and Parts Technician to maintain stock for inventoryStay informed about safety standards specific to the industry and the vehicles being worked on.

Stay updated on advancements in vehicle technology through training and professional development. Collaborate with other mechanics, technicians, and support staff to address complex issues or projects.

Additional Duties: Employees in this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the operating and maintenance principles of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and construction equipment.

 

Knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment specification, maintenance, standards, and disposal practices.

 

Knowledge of metal fabrication and welding.

 

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive repair trade. Skill in the proper use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the mechanical trade.

Skill in repairing defects in a wide variety of automotive equipment. Ability to diagnose mechanical and electronic failures.

Ability to adapt to changes in technology and modern equipment. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

Ability to work cooperatively with others as a member of a service delivery team. Ability to prepare and maintain various records, reports, and inventory schedules.

Ability to intermittently sit, stand, walk, bend, crouch, or stoop to perform a wide variety of job tasks.

 

Ability to lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools/equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.


 

Working Conditions

 

Most work is completed in a shop; on occasion, equipment repairs are made in the field, which may involve hazardous conditions. The work involves exposure to safety hazards normally associated with general vehicle and equipment repair.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High School diploma or equivalent plus two (2) years of vocational coursework in automotive mechanics.
  1. Four (4) years of progressively responsible auto mechanic experience. Experience must include specialized trade skills in welding, electronic diagnostics, or heavy-duty diesel equipment.
  1. OR have a combination of education, training, and work experience that is equivalent to #1 and #2 above and provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  1. Valid State of Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  2. Applicable endorsements to include Hazmat, air brake, and tanker (or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  3. Under Ground Storage Tank Operator Certification, A and B, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  4. Emergency Vehicle Technician Training
