Job Summary
This position Is responsible for investigating cases that may appear for trial in the courts of Rockdale County. This is the full performance level classification in this series; additionally, employees in this class may serve in a supervisory capacity or as a team leader. Employees in this class assist prosecutors with cases prior to and during trial, including locating/interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence. Work is performed in accordance with federal, state, and county ordinances and regulations, departmental policies, and procedures governing law enforcement actions, including court procedures. The Chief Investigator assigns work in terms of general instructions. Completed work Is spot-checked for accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.
Essential Functions

Conducts investigations and follow-up investigations of criminal cases; summarizes/reviews case files; writes reports; coordinates with local law enforcement agencies; locates and interviews witnesses, defendants, and victims to develop essential evidence for a case.
Assists victims/witnesses during the trial process; assists in pre-trial preparations; assists prosecutors during hearings and trials; interviews jurors post-trial.
Serves civil documents; serves subpoenas; serves search warrants; enforces laws and makes arrests as necessary; may assist with courthouse security.
Secures confidential and sensitive reports, statements, and other restricted records and documents relating to criminal matters from appropriate law enforcement agencies.
Receives and processes evidence according to established procedures; tracks evidence submitted to the crime lab.
May have supervisory responsibility over lower-level investigators. Provides testimony in court to support investigations.
Employees in this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by the District Attorney or other proper authority.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of Georgia criminal statutes and codes, law enforcement procedures, and the criminal justice system.
Knowledge of legal procedures and rules of evidence.
Knowledge of methods, principles, standards, and investigation and interviewing techniques. Knowledge of firearms.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Skill in oral and written communications. Skill in operating modern office equipment.
Ability to give clear, concise, and accurate information. Ability to use discretion in handling confidential information.
Ability to learn, interpret, and apply provisions of criminal law. Ability to conduct research and write reports.
Ability to hear, speak, and see in order to communicate with the general public and to perform other job related tasks.
Ability to climb, bend, twist, reach, crawl, and kneel; to sit for prolonged periods; and to move, push, pull, or lift heavy objects.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment, at incident scenes, and at various locations investigating cases and interviewing witnesses, defendants, and victims.
Minimum Qualifications
1) Associate's degree in criminal justice or a related field.
2) Five (5) years of law enforcement experience.
3) OR have a combination of education, training and work experience that is equivalent to #1 and #2 above that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
4) Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) certification as a peace officer.
Preference
1) Investigative experience in a District Attorney's office.
