TITLE: EMT- Basic

REPORTS TO: Field Supervisor

Job Summary:

Works under the direction of a licensed Paramedic or EMT Specialist (if applicable) adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by the MDCIS, in the care and transportation of the sick and injured. Participates in required continuing education programs as mandated by the MDCIS to maintain a current EMT license. Performs all other job duties as outlined below. Adheres to all company policies and procedures as set forth by the Company. Is responsible directly to the Supervisors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Always displays a courteous and professional attitude while at work.

2. Maintains a neat, clean and professional appearance while at work, as established in the company dress code.

3. Responds to all ambulance runs as the dispatcher assigns them, and does so according to company established standards in a safe manner.

4. Has the ability to perform under stressful and sometimes highly emotional situations.

5. Strives for personal safety as well as the safety of those around him/her. Specifically the employee will be conscious of infectious disease precautions, hazardous materials response, driver safety, back safety and all other safety related issues.

6. Maintains Basic skills:

a) Taking of vital signs

b) Application of dressings and splints

c) Basic airway management

d) CPR

e) Oxygen administration

f) Extrication techniques

g) History taking

h) Safe and defensive emergency and non-emergency driving technique

i) Appropriate radio usage, including the ability to give complete and concise Med-com reports

j) Proper spinal immobilization

k) Childbirth techniques

7. Maintains ability to operate various pieces of equipment:

a) KED board

b) Spinal immobilization devices

c) Oxygen regulators

d) Sphygmomanometer

e) VHF and UHF radios

f) Stretchers

8. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the KCEMS protocols.

9. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the Rockford’s service area and policies.

10. Records all information concisely, accurately and completely on the appropriate forms; ie: run reports, billing sheets, Medicare forms, ambulance check list form.

11. Works as a team with his/her partner, sharing knowledge, information and ideas.

12. Communicates well with other personnel such as medical and emergency service

physicians, nurses, firefighters and police officers.

13. Constructively participates in meetings held within the Company.

14. Maintains his/her ambulance and station, making sure they are clean and stocked

with appropriate supplies.

15. Maintains consistent attendance.

16. Has the ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively.

17. Demonstrates clinical competence and has the desire to upgrade level of training.

18. Maintains patient confidentiality.

19. Performs all other duties as determined appropriate by management.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

1. Unimpaired Mobility: Must be able to respond quickly to ambulance calls, must physically be able to access patients located in difficult terrain and dangerous environments and locations. Must be able to climb stairs and other structures, must be able to work in close and dangerous environments, such as without limitation, damaged vehicles and structures on fire, must be able to carry heavy equipment and patients.

2. Physical Abilities: Must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements including without limitation lifting and moving of heavy equipment and patients in a variety of environmental and dangerous conditions, perform CPR and other lifesaving maneuvers. Water rescues may require the ability to swim at basic survival levels, and other exhausting demands in emergent situations.

3. Fine Motor Skills: Must be able to perform required medical skills and techniques, without limitations bandaging, splinting and establishing an IV, perform endotracheal intubation and other advanced airway techniques, manual defibrillation, pleural decompression.

4. Vision: Must have correctable vision that permits the safe operation of emergency vehicles, the reading of gauges, fine print and figures associated with emergent medical care and treatment, and color acuity to differentiate varying colors that may be necessary in providing emergency care and treatment.

5. Hearing: Must be able to obtain information provided by patients, family members, bystanders, medical professionals and other emergency personnel; and adequate hearing necessary to provide emergency care and treatment in active, distracting environments.

6. Speech: Must be able to speak and enunciate clearly and at a level audible to others in loud conditions. Must be able to verbally communicate in stressful and distracting environments with patients, family members, medical professionals and other emergency personnel.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

1. Must be able to lift minimum of 100 pounds alone at waist high level and carry a distance of 50 yards without pausing.

2. Must be adaptive to work in all types of weather conditions including, but not limited to rain, snow, heat, etc.

3. Individual in this position may be at risk for exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials.

4. Individual is required to stand for long periods of time and to use hands, and fingers, handle or feel. Individual is required to reach with hands, arms and may be required to sit, stoop, kneel or crawl.

Qualifications:

1. Completion of a state approved Basic EMT course, possessing a current Basic EMT graduate or Basic EMT license.

2. High school graduate or GED.

3. Valid drivers license with chauffer endorsement and clean driving record.

5. No felony or misdemeanor convictions.

6. Must meet basic performance based physical requirements. *

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $13.00 - $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 36 – 72 per week
