Position Overview: The Manager of Engagement ensures that each visitor has a dynamic, immersive, fun experience that reflects the mission of Discovery Center Museum. This position requires a friendly, welcoming individual who enjoys engaging with children and families in a customer-facing environment. The Manager of Engagement supervises Discovery Guide staff; ensures and supports sufficient staffing coverage in exhibit spaces and at the front desk; supports day-to-day operations and special events. This position carries out cash-handling policies; acts as a day-of liaison for field trips and facility rentals; and ensures museum standards for cleanliness.
Regular schedule is Tuesday – Saturday with occasional evenings.
Discovery Center: Discovery Center Museum in Rockford, Illinois is dedicated to hands-on learning in the arts and sciences through more than 300 exciting exhibits spread over two floors and an award winning outdoor Discovery Park. We serve children, parents, and educators from the Rockford region and beyond through both Museum visits and outreach programs.
Duties and Responsibilities

Manages Discovery Guides and daily museum floor operations.

Supervises Discovery Guide staff and oversees training of new Discovery Guides. Works with the Director of Engagement on staffing levels and needs.

Provides ongoing coaching to Discovery Guides and leads monthly Discovery Guide staff meeting.

Manages daily exhibit floor staffing and scheduling ensuring all exhibit spaces are adequately staffed.

Responds to incidents and files incident reports for First Aid and visitor concerns. Coordinates staff response for emergency situations.

Supervises exhibit opening and closing procedures.

Collect visitor feedback to improve museum offerings.

Works with the Exhibit department on exhibit maintenance, exhibit supplies, and training of museum staff in procedures.

Works with the Director of Facilities & Operations on museum inventory and purchasing. Monitor inventory levels and reorder supplies as needed, and conduct regular inventory audits.

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and/or at least three years of experience in a role that required a high degree of self-motivation, collaboration, organization, flexibility, and managerial experience

Exceptional customer service skills and commitment to providing superior visitor experience.

Proficient in Google Workspace and Microsoft programs, scheduling, data management.

Strong organizational and multitasking skills.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Able to work in a fast-paced, active environment with the ability to adapt to change.
This position requires the ability to:
- This position requires the ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, occasionally lift from floor to waist, and occasionally reach above shoulder height to access supplies.
- Must be able to push, pull and lift up to 40 lbs.
- Must also be able to maintain friendly and courteous interactions with museum staff and visitors in a moderately noisy environment.
