General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate skilled human support work providing dental care and palliative emergency dental care, answering phones, making appointments, taking payments, sterilizing equipment, preparing and maintaining files and records, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the Dentist in the agency’s Mobile Dental Unit. The employee in this position will travel to schools in Rockingham County and work primarily with children.
The schedule for this position is typically 8am-4pm Monday - Thursday. (Occasional Fridays may be required)
Qualification Requirements

Essential Functions
Assists the Dentist with all treatment procedures.
Examines patients' oral condition; charts existing teeth and restorations.
Assists with x-rays, scanning, and mounting of radiographs.
Prepares instrument tray for examination and procedures; prepares medications, cements, alloys, etc.
Provides patients with information about oral healthcare.
Cleans, sterilizes and maintains equipment.
Makes appointments, screens patients for eligibility, files patients records.
Inventories and stocks equipment and supplies.
Operates various types of equipment, such as oral evacuation device, retractors, and air and water devices.
Enters data into system; prepares and maintains files and records.
Assists patients with completing required paperwork; develops patient information packets.
Prepares reports and other types of correspondence; prepares and maintains files and records.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of County and Department policies and procedures; comprehensive knowledge of applicable local and State laws, rules and regulations; thorough knowledge of the equipment, instruments, practices and procedures utilized in a general dentistry practice; thorough knowledge in preparing reports and other types of correspondence; thorough knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software (e.g. Avatar, NC Tracks); ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to maintain effective working relationships medical officials, patients, and associates.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience working in a dental office, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and N95 Mask; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Preference will be given to applicants who have completed an ADA-accredited dental assisting program.
Special Requirements
Obtain Intraoral Radiology, Coronal Polish, Sterilization/Infection Control/OSHA, ICS 100, IS 200, 700 and 800 certifications within six months of hire.
Complete Dental Office Emergencies, Chairside Dental Assistant and Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse & Neglect training within six months of hire.
Valid driver's license
Note: In accordance with State mandates and the Rockingham County Emergency Operations Plan, Rockingham County Health and Human Services staff from the Divisions of Social Services, Public Health and Integrated Health are required to staff emergency shelters during times of disaster. Please be advised that every staff person is eligible to be assigned to an emergency shelter or Emergency Operations Center.
