General Definition of Work
Kennel Attendants perform duties associated with the care and maintenance of the animal shelter. Work requires that the employee keep animal enclosures clean and sanitized thoroughly twice a day and feeds the animals in the shelter's care. This employee helps to ensure the health and care of the animals by reporting any change in an animal's condition to a Shelter Technician and provides prescribed medication during morning and afternoon rounds. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Shelter Technicians and reports to the Shelter Supervisor. This position is for part-time employment of 19 hours. Employee must be able to work weekends and holidays.
Graduation from high school or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Prefer knowledge or experience with animal care.

- Maintains the feeding schedule for the animals at the shelter; this includes feeding the appropriate amount of food for a variety of different sized animals, providing clean drinking water and washing all dishes associated with feedings.
- Maintains cleanliness of the shelter by removing organic matter and disinfecting the enclosures. This also includes laundry, sweeping and moping.
- Spot cleans throughout the day to keep enclosures clean and odor free.
- Reads medication charts located in Isolation Rooms to administer medications.
- Assists Shelter Technicians with the intake process of incoming animals from Animal Control agencies and the general public.
- Assists Shelter Technicians by restraining animals for vaccinations and exams.
- Assists in showing the general public animals available for adoption and assists clients in looking for lost pets.
- Uses appropriate safety equipment, when needed, to transfer animals safely.
- Performs related work as required.
- Working knowledge of how to care for animals (i.e. feeding, watering, cleaning and handling).
- Working knowledge of how to handle a variety of animal species and sizes. (i.e. lead, carry and restrain)
- Working knowledge of safe procedures for handling animals.
- Working knowledge of state and local animal control laws, policies and procedures and knowledge of public health rabies laws.
- Working knowledge of County and department policies and procedures.
- Ability to properly use cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Ability to operate a computer or related software.
- Ability to use courtesy and tact in dealing with the public and outside agencies.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers orally and in writing.
- Ability to promote a positive team atmosphere and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and volunteers.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds or more
- Ability to stand/walk for 6 to 8 hours.
- Ability to work weekends and holidays.
