Under general supervision, performs skilled work in rescuing accident victims and performing advanced emergency care including the administration of life sustaining treatment. Work involves serving as lead worker of an ambulance crew and, in the event that the other members of the crew are classified as Emergency Medical Technician - Basic or Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate, is responsible for the medical care administered to the patient. Employee administers emergency cardiac care as well as other advanced emergency medical treatments such as administering drugs parenterally, orally, or topically; obtaining blood; and performing pulmonary ventilation. Employee is also responsible assisting in coordination and presentation of training and certification programs for Emergency Medical Technicians. Employee must exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in dealing with the general public. Employee is responsible for performing in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, but must exercise considerable independent judgment in diagnosing a victim's condition and in applying life sustaining treatment. Employee is exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Reports to EMS - Shift Supervisor.
Responds to emergency calls as a mobile medical unit attendant or driver and performs duties in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, established policies, procedures and protocols, and within established chain of command; refers to policy manuals as necessary.
Assesses and evaluates situation at scenes of emergency response; surveys and secures scene, requesting additional assistance, as necessary; determines mechanism of injury and equipment needed to effect rescue and initiation of treatment.
Assesses patients, recognizing need for immediate transportation or conducting interview with patient to ascertain extent of injuries; performs secondary injury survey and formulates plan of action pertaining to need of Basic or Advanced Life Support care.
Provides medical care at the Basic Life Support level, as appropriate, including: maintaining ABC's and C-Spine, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, as necessary; utilizing airway adjunct equipment; initiating hemorrhage control; recognizing and treating shock; performing spinal immobilization; monitoring vital signs and continually reassessing patients' condition; utilizing basic life support equipment; immobilizing suspected fractures or dislocations; provides psychological support and patient education.
Provides medical care at the Advanced Life Support level, as appropriate, including: monitoring and interpreting ECG; initiating intravenous therapy using aseptic technique; administering medications according to approved treatment protocols or orders from physicians; performs defibrillations/cardioversions; applies MAST and inflates as directed; utilizes advanced life support equipment; performs invasive procedures, (i.e., NG tube, venipuncture, etc.).
Gains access to and moves patient, utilizing protective equipment and taking quickest route to patient in consideration of safety of patient, and EMS personnel; supervises patient safety during extrication procedures; prepares patient for transport in accordance with approved treatment protocols.
Performs emergency childbirth and administers neonatal care.
Wears protective equipment when contact with bodily fluids of patients is possible, and reports incidents of significant exposure; cleans or discards contaminated equipment, according to established policies and procedures.
Responds to incidents of multiple casualties in accordance with established disaster response plans; recognizes need for hazardous material response personnel and calls for assistance accordingly; performs in accordance with established protocols for handling patients exposed to hazardous materials, including use of hazardous materials response kit.
Maintains clear and concise communication with EMS personnel, hospital personnel utilizing two-radios, or telephones, as available; establishes rapport with family members of patients or bystanders.
Prepares reports and logs of observations, incidents and treatments performed; documents deviations from standard operating procedures, ensuring that deviations are in best interests of patient.
May respond to non-emergency calls to transport patients to or between medical facilities.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operates mobile medical unit in accordance with state law and established procedures for parking and backing at scene; determines shortest route to scene of call and proceeds accordingly; inspects and tests ambulances and their emergency equipment; cleans and sanitizes ambulance daily; completes logs and forms to check out equipment; ensures that they are in proper and good working order, and are stocked with supplies and materials; makes routine adjustments, but reports other than minor defects for specialized attention.
Attends conferences, seminars, workshops, classes, lectures, etc., as appropriate, to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and development in the field of emergency response and emergency medical treatment; completes course work as required to obtain and maintain certification; participates in activities of department committees and/or professional organizations, as appropriate.
Assists training officer in coordinating and/or presenting orientation, training and continuing education programs for certification; presents orientation sessions and instructs technicians in procedures and
emergency medical service protocols.
Performs other related work as required.

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Graduation from high school and 1 to 2 years of experience in advanced emergency medical service work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Certification as a Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Possession of Paramedic certification upon hire.
Obtain PALS, ACLS and ITLS certifications within one year of hire.
