Work involves serving legal papers, attending court, answering complaint calls and patrolling the County in an official vehicle to deter crime or apprehend violators or suspects. Position is distinguished from the Deputy Sheriff I in that more independence of action is expected because of additional training and experience. Employee must exercise initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Employee must also exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in frequent contact with the public. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Patrols an assigned area of the County; inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments; answers complaint calls and assists in investigating crimes and disturbances; interviews witnesses; gathers evidence; interrogates suspects and makes arrest; prepares investigation reports; secures crime scenes, and fire and rescue scenes, controlling access to area and monitoring activity. Serves legal papers such as summons, warrants, commitment papers and special court orders; uses directories and other means to locate designated parties; briefly explains the meaning of papers and makes arrest when necessary. Processes suspects after arrest, taking fingerprints and photographs, and completing associated records; assists State Highway Patrol in processing suspects. Appears in court as a witness to give testimony. Cooperates with law enforcement officers of other governmental units in investigations and arrests. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS May transport prisoners and mental patients to and from various institutions. May serve as court bailiff, providing security for courthouse and for courtroom participants, maintaining order in court, opening and recessing court, and accompanying inmates to and from court. May serve as member of Special Response Team, responding to various high-risk or crisis situations such as hostage situations, shootings, suicide attempts, etc. May provide security at sporting events, and at other public events where large crowds are anticipated; may provide escorts in funeral processions or for businesses making bank deposits. Performs other related work as required.Physical RequirementsThis work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Note: In accordance with State mandates and the Rockingham County Emergency Operations Plan, Rockingham County Health and Human Services staff from the Divisions of Social Services, Public Health and Integrated Health are required to staff emergency shelters during times of disaster. Please be advised that every staff person is eligible to be assigned to an emergency shelter or Emergency Operations Center.
