Senior Counselor Job Description
The role of the Senior counselor is central to the day-to-day functioning of any residential program. This individual assumes primary responsibility for establishing the house routing; for orchestrating all house activities; for ensuring that the house itself is kept clean and in good repair; for ensuring that each resident attends all scheduled programs and appointments; for ensuring that all medications are ordered and refilled as necessary and for establishing the tone of the house.
The following tasks represent some of the daily expectations of the senior counselor:
1. Counting all controlled medications ensuring each resident has enough and there are none misplaced/missing; Any medication sheet which shows a five day supply or less should initiate re-order or the doctor should be asked to “call in” a new prescription if no additional refills are available.; making sure all residents are taking prescriptions as prescribed; checking to make sure all residents are prepared to attend regularly scheduled activities as well as medical or clinic appointments; make sure all medications and dosages for each resident are up to date in system.
2. Checking the whereabouts of all residents so that each is "present or accounted for"; checking the overall condition of the houses.
3. Checking to see if each resident has properly performed personal hygiene activities (showering, weather appropriate clothing, dressed in clean and neat clothing); checking cleanliness of all houses (kitchen, bathrooms, living space, bedrooms); assist residents in cleaning as needed;
4. Using restorative services as a guideline to make sure that program activities are scheduled throughout the day and evening, which will allow every resident the opportunity to gain the skills necessary in order to move to the next level of independent functioning; make sure staff are assigned to carry out these activities and that residents are scheduled to involve themselves in them.
6. Document all conversations regarding each resident; make sure that all appointments, which are received verbally, are noted in the log book as well as a calendar for the day of appointment; make sure that all doctors orders for meds are faxed directly to the appropriate pharmacy; make sure contact info for all residents doctors, treatment teams, other providers are all up to date in system.
7. Provide 1-2 shopping trips a week for residents to buy their own household supplies and food items
8. Plan, in concert with supervisor and other staff, for the conduct of evening and weekend activities such as shopping, field trips or purely recreational events; make sure funds are available to do such activities.
9. All rooms should be inspected for cleanliness and neatness; all rooms should be inspected to ensure that each contains all necessary items for daily living (sheets, towels, blankets, personal grooming, supplies)
10. All physical items in house should be in working order (kitchen appliances, bathrooms, all cooling/heating systems)
12. Possible Evening/Weekend coverage will be required.
* The houses should be fully cleaned, residents must be assigned specific chores to ensure the cleanliness of house is maintained
Other duties, as may be required, as situations arise throughout each day.
